Chapter 10 - A New Dawn

Five years passed in the blink of an eye.

The rusty stain on the gravel of Diane's old driveway was long gone, washed away by years of rain and time. Diane had successfully completed her rehabilitation and counseling programs, eventually earning limited joint custody and rebuilding a healthy, stable relationship with both children based on mutual trust and accountability. She never remarried, choosing instead to dedicate her career to advocating for abused children through local non-profit organizations.

I took a quiet job as a civilian security consultant for a local logistics firm, allowing me to be home every evening for dinner. Our house smelled constantly of baking cookies, comic book ink, and the comforting chaos of everyday family life.

On a warm Saturday afternoon in June, I stood on our back porch, sipping black coffee and watching the sunlight filter through the oak trees in our backyard.

Ava, now seventeen and taller than me in her hiking boots, was teaching Tommy—now eleven and full of boisterous energy—how to throw a curveball in the yard. The ball zipped through the air with a clean thwack into the catcher's mitt.

"Not bad, kid!" Ava laughed, tossing the ball back. "Keep your elbow up!"

My phone buzzed in my pocket. It was a text from an old military buddy asking if I missed the structure of base life in Germany.

I looked down at the screen, smiled, and typed back a simple, definitive reply: "Negative. My deployment is right where it needs to be."

I locked the phone, slid it back into my pocket, and walked down the steps to join my kids in the sunshine. The past was a closed chapter, locked away behind walls of justice and truth. The future belonged entirely to us.
