Chapter 5 - The Hidden Truth

I looked at Clara, but my gratitude was instantly checked by a sudden realization. "If he woke up two weeks ago... why didn't you call me? Why are you keeping him hidden now?"

Clara’s shoulders tensed. She shrank back into the sofa, avoiding my gaze.

"Clara," Glen’s voice turned dangerously stern. He leaned over the table. "The video shows he regained consciousness. He asked for Maya. Why didn't you tell us?"

"Because... because of the trust fund," Clara whispered, her voice barely audible.

"What trust fund?" Uncle Richard asked as he walked into the living room, having just finished settling the kids upstairs. He had heard the last sentence and his face hardened. "Arthur’s estate was frozen after his disappearance. Clara, you were appointed trustee of his business assets, but the main inheritance was tied to a survival clause!"

"If Arthur dies or is declared legally dead," I said, the pieces assembling in my head with horrifying clarity, "the corporate shares and the estate pass entirely to Clara. But if he is alive and regains mental capacity..."

"...Everything reverts to Arthur, and through his primary will, to Maya," Uncle Richard finished, his eyes widening in disgust. "You monster."

Clara looked up, defensive and desperate. "That’s not all of it! You think I'm just greedy?! The medical facility costs eighty thousand dollars a month! The trust fund was running out! If I declared him restored and conscious, his former business partners—the men who forced him out of the company six years ago—would have sued the estate into bankruptcy! I was holding off until I could secure his legal protections!"

"You kept a daughter away from her dying father for money and corporate politics?" I stood up, my voice shaking with pure fury. "He asked for me! In that video, he called my name!"

"I was going to tell you!" Clara screamed back, standing up to face me. "I came to Ariel’s birthday today to find a way to tell you! I was terrified! I've spent six years carrying this secret alone, living in a fake house, wearing a fake smile, managing doctors, lawyers, and bank accounts! I am exhausted, Maya!"

"You're not the victim here, Clara," Glen said coldly, pulling out his smartphone. "We are calling the police, and then we are going to Vermont."

"No! Don't call the police!" Clara panicked, reaching for Glen’s phone. "If you involve law enforcement, the experimental clinic will shut down instantly to avoid regulatory investigations! They will discharge Arthur! He’s too weak to be moved without specialized transport!"

I looked at the video playing on the laptop screen. My father was staring blankly at the ceiling, his hand reaching out weakly into the empty air of a sterile room hundreds of miles away. He was trapped—not just by his body, but by a web of lies, money, and fear.

"Glen, put the phone down," I said softly.

Glen paused, looking at me in surprise. "Maya, she lied to you for six years."

"I know," I said, looking Clara directly in the eyes. "And she’s going to take us to him right now."
