Chapter 3 - The Submerged Secret

The splash echoed off the brick walls surrounding the courtyard. Clara surfaced instantly, gasping for air, her styled hair plastered across her face. The force of the fall had torn the delicate platinum chain from her neck.
"My necklace!" she shrieked, panic entirely consuming her. She didn't try to climb out; instead, she dove back under the crystal-clear water, frantically searching the blue-tiled floor of the pool.
Glen didn't hesitate. He kicked off his sandals and plunged into the pool. He swam straight down toward the glittering metal sinking toward the drain. Clara tried to grab his arm underwater to stop him, but Glen pulled away, his longer reach enabling him to snatch the pendant just inches before it reached the main suction vent.
They both broke the surface together. Clara lunged for Glen’s hand, her face contorted in a terrifying mix of rage and despair. "Give it back to me! That’s mine! It’s private property!"
"Get back!" Glen shoved her away gently but firmly, climbing out onto the deck. He offered his hand to me, dropping the dripping piece of jewelry into my palm.
The metal was cold. The clear capsule was perfectly dry inside, sealed water-tight. Now, holding it under the bright afternoon sunlight, there was no mistaking it.
It wasn't just a photograph.
Inside the clear resin was a micro-SD card, layered beneath a translucent film print of my father’s face in the hospital room.
My hands shook violently as I held it. My uncle Richard walked over, his expression darkening as he looked down at my hand. "Is that... Arthur? Maya, where did she get a photo of Arthur in a modern hospital room? When he disappeared, he was healthy!"
"She lied," I whispered. "She lied to the police. She lied to all of us."
Clara dragged herself out of the pool, dripping wet, looking defeated and cornered. The other guests were watching in complete shock. Nobody was smiling anymore.
"Maya, listen to me," Clara pleaded, her voice trembling, dropping all aggression as she realized she was entirely surrounded. "You don't understand what happened. You were too young, too emotional. Arthur... your father... he made me promise."
"Promise what?" I hissed, stepping toward her. "He disappeared from his office on a Tuesday afternoon! His car was found abandoned near the river! We spent months looking for his body! I spent six years thinking my father committed suicide or was murdered! What did you do to him?!"
"He's not dead!" Clara blurted out.
The words hung in the warm summer air like a physical blow. Uncle Richard gasped. I felt the ground tilt beneath my feet, and Glen caught my elbow to keep me upright.
"He's not dead?" I repeated, my voice hollow. "Where is he, Clara? Where is my father?"
Clara closed her eyes, tears finally streaming down her face, mixing with the pool water. "If I tell you... if I tell you the truth... you have to understand that I was trying to protect him. I was trying to keep our family from being destroyed."
May you like
"Where is he?" I screamed.
"He's at St. Jude’s Private Care Facility in Vermont," Clara choked out. "He’s been in a coma for six years."
