Chapter 2 - The Unraveling at the Table

The cream envelope contained far more than just a birth certificate. The top document was a certified, court-admissible DNA test from a accredited state laboratory. It showed a 99.99% probability of paternity. Logan was, without a shadow of a doubt, Arya’s biological father. But it was the second, third, and fourth documents beneath the DNA test that drained the color from the room.

Victoria’s manicured fingers trembled as she pulled out the second sheet: a color printout of the email thread titled FRESH START.

"What is this nonsense?" Victoria hissed, though her voice lacked its earlier venom. She tried to slide the papers back into the sleeve, but the room was already leaning in.

"Read page two, Victoria," I said, my voice echoing off the crystal chandeliers of the Westchester ballroom. "Read the part where you offered your son five hundred thousand dollars from your deceased husband's trust to publicly humiliate me and question the purity of your own granddaughter."

A collective gasp rippled through the twenty-five guests. Cousin Marcus, who had been chuckling only moments before, dropped his fork onto his porcelain plate with a loud clatter.

Logan lunged forward, snatching the papers from his mother’s hands. His eyes scanned the printed text—the exact timestamps, the IP addresses, the direct quotes from his mother, and his own replies agreeing to the scheme.

"Skyler, wait—this isn't what it looks like," Logan stammered, stepping away from Chloe. His hand, which had been resting so comfortably on Chloe’s shoulder a minute ago, dropped like he had touched hot iron. Chloe backed up half a step, her cheeks flushing a deep, mottled red that matched her dress.

"Isn't it?" I asked calmly, swaying slightly to soothe Arya, who had quieted down, her small blue eyes looking wide and innocent at the silent crowd. "You thought my daughter's eyes were proof of infidelity, Logan. But if you’d ever bothered to read your own family’s medical history—or paid attention in high school biology—you’d know that blue eyes are a recessive gene. My father had blue eyes. Your maternal grandmother had blue eyes. But you were so eager for a half-million-dollar payday from your mother that you didn't even care to check."

"Skyler, please, let's talk about this privately," Logan pleaded, taking a step toward me.

"We are talking about it privately," I replied, gesturing around the room at his aunts, uncles, and corporate colleagues. "This is your family, Logan. The people you invited to watch my execution. I just brought the real evidence."

Victoria stood up, her silver silk gown swishing loudly. She tried to regain her regal composure, pointing a sharp, silver-nailed finger at me. "You think you're clever, Skyler? You're a nobody from a middle-class background! You came into this family with nothing, and you'll leave with nothing! I will make sure my son divorces you, and you won't see a dime of the Carile estate!"

"That brings us to the third document in the envelope," I said, looking directly at Victoria.

Logan turned the page. His eyes went wide. "A restraining order? A subpoena?"

"Not just a subpoena, Logan," I said gently. "A petition for full legal and physical custody of Arya, an emergency motion to freeze all joint bank accounts due to suspected dissipation of marital assets, and a formal complaint filed with the state board regarding the unauthorized transfers from your family’s real estate holdings into Chloe Bennett’s private firm."

Chloe’s head snapped up. "What?"

"Did you really think I wouldn't notice the fifty thousand dollars transferred from our joint account into 'Bennett Development Group' three weeks ago, Chloe?" I asked, looking the woman straight in the eyes. "My forensic accountant worked through the holiday weekend. You and Logan didn't just plan a slander campaign; you committed wire fraud."

The silence in the ballroom was absolute. Guests were staring at their plates, completely paralyzed by the catastrophic turn of events. Victoria sat down heavily in her chair, her face pale, while Chloe hurriedly grabbed her designer clutch from the table.

"I... I think I should leave," Chloe whispered, her voice tight.

"You can leave, Chloe," I said, stepping aside to clear her path to the doors. "But my attorney's process server is waiting in the lobby. She has a stack of paper meant specifically for you."

May you like

Without another word, Chloe bolted toward the exit, the heels of her red pumps clicking frantically against the marble floor. Logan made a motion to follow her, then looked back at me, torn, pathetic, and entirely exposed.

"Happy first birthday, Arya," I whispered into my daughter’s dark curls. I turned on my heel, leaving the Carile family sitting among their cold dinners and ruined reputations.
