Chapter 10 - A Happy Ending (Arya’s Fourth Birthday)

The backyard of our Brooklyn home was filled with laughter, colorful balloons, and the delicious scent of fresh wood-fired pizza baking in our outdoor oven.
It was Arya’s fourth birthday.
Over thirty people filled the garden: my close friends, Julian’s warm and welcoming family, my design team colleagues, and Eleanor Vance, who was currently sitting on the porch sipping lemonade and laughing with my mother.
Children were running across the lush green lawn, playing tag around the old oak tree.
In the center of the lawn stood Arya. She wore a bright yellow summer dress, her dark curly hair pinned back with a daisy clip. Her striking blue eyes—the very eyes that had been used as a weapon against us three years ago—were sparkling with pure, unfiltered joy.
"Daddy, look!" Arya giggled, running across the grass and throwing her arms around Julian’s legs. "Jules made the big bubble!"
Julian laughed, lifting Arya effortlessly into his arms and twirling her around as she squealed with delight. "That was a giant bubble, princess! Let's see if we can make an even bigger one!"
I walked over to them, holding a tray of freshly baked cupcakes topped with blue frosting and edible sugar flowers.
Julian looked at me, his eyes filled with endless warmth and devotion, and kissed my temple as I stood beside them.
"How is the birthday girl doing?" I asked, smoothing down Arya's yellow dress.
"Best birthday ever, Mommy!" Arya beamed, giving me a sweet, sticky hug around my neck. "Can we sing happy birthday now?"
"We sure can, sweetheart," I smiled.
We gathered everyone around the outdoor picnic table, which was decorated with fairy lights and fresh flowers. I placed a beautiful four-tier birthday cake in front of Arya, lighting the four bright blue candles on top.
Everyone gathered close, wrapping their arms around one another.
Happy birthday to you... Happy birthday to you... Happy birthday, dear Arya... Happy birthday to you!
Arya closed her blue eyes tight, made a wish with all her little heart, and blew out all four candles in one big breath.
The crowd erupted into cheers and applause. Julian kissed the top of Arya’s head, and she giggled, leaning her head against his chest securely.
I stood back for a moment, watching my daughter surrounded by a family that truly loved her—a family built not on legacy, status, or money, but on unconditional love, respect, and truth.
I looked down at the cream envelope I used to carry in my purse—the painful memory of a past that could no longer touch us. I had fought through the darkness, survived the betrayal, and claimed the life my daughter and I deserved.

I reached out and took Julian’s hand, holding Arya close to my side.
We were finally home. And our story was just beginning.
