Chapter 9 - The Sketchbook Completed

A year passed.
It was another bright July afternoon, but this time, there was no suffocating heat wave—just a perfect summer breeze rustling through the leaves of our backyard oak tree.
Sophie was five now, running around the yard with a group of friends, playing tag, her laughter ringing out across the garden.
My father and Evelyn had bought a small summer cottage by the lake, spending their weekends gardening, fishing, and hosting family dinners. Evelyn had gained back her full energy; she was vibrant, healthy, and full of life, taking daily morning walks with my father hand-in-hand.
I sat on the patio porch swing, holding a warm cup of coffee. Beside me sat Ryan’s leather sketchbook.
Over the past year, Ryan had continued drawing in it. It was no longer a secret hidden behind tax documents in his office; it sat on our living room coffee table, a cherished family treasure.
I opened the book to the final pages.
Ryan had drawn a new series of sketches.
On one page was a drawing of the hospital gala, depicting our family sitting together in the front row, illuminated by stage lights.
On the next page was a delicate, detailed sketch of the Pulse-Sync 4 device, but surrounding the titanium casing were hand-drawn flowers and vines, turning a medical instrument into a piece of living art.
And on the very last page, Ryan had drawn a picture of our backyard from that afternoon. In the center of the drawing were four figures: my father, Evelyn, Sophie, and me, all smiling together under the afternoon sun.
Beneath the final drawing, Ryan had written a short inscription:
Secrets born of fear tear families apart. But secrets born of love can rebuild them stronger than before. Life is not measured by the number of beats our heart makes, but by the moments that take our breath away.
I felt a pair of strong arms gently wrap around my shoulders from behind. Ryan rested his chin on the top of my head, looking down at the book in my lap.
"Are you reviewing my bad college drawings again?" he teased softly, his breath warm against my ear.
I leaned back against his chest, placing my hands over his. "These are the best drawings in the world, Ryan."
"The story's not finished, you know," he whispered.
I turned my head slightly to look at him. "Oh yeah? What’s next?"
Ryan reached down, sliding his hand gently onto my stomach, resting his palm there with a soft, knowing smile. "We're going to need a bigger sketchbook."
I gasped, looking up at his eyes, which were shining with uncontainable joy and tenderness. "Ryan... are you...?"

"I checked the tests from your doctor's visit this morning," he smiled, tears of happiness rising in his eyes. "Sophie is going to be a big sister."
I let out a breathless laugh, turning around completely in his arms and burying my face in his neck, holding him with everything I had.
