Chapter 7 - The Healing Summer

Three weeks later, the intense heat wave finally broke, giving way to a cool, breezy August afternoon.

Evelyn was back home. Her recovery had been nothing short of miraculous. The surgical site on her chest had healed cleanly, leaving behind a fine, thin scar that was now a badge of survival rather than a secret of shame. The Pulse-Sync 4 was functioning flawlessly, transmitting daily health metrics directly to Ryan’s laboratory servers.

Our backyard, which had been the scene of near tragedy three weeks ago, had been transformed. Pink and gold streamers hung from the trees, and a giant banner stretched across the patio deck: HAPPY RE-BIRTHDAY, GRANDMA EVELYN & SOPHIE!

Friends, family, and neighbors who had witnessed the dramatic event at the previous party had returned—not out of morbid curiosity, but to celebrate a genuine miracle.

Ryan stood near the grill, just as he had weeks before. But this time, he looked rested. The dark circles under his eyes were completely gone. He was laughing with my father, who was actively helping him flip burgers instead of sleeping under the umbrella.

I stood on the porch, holding a glass of iced tea, watching them.

Evelyn was sitting in a comfortable garden chair under the shade of the oak tree. Sophie was sitting on her lap, holding an imaginary teacup from the wooden kitchen set Evelyn had painted for her.

"More tea, Grandma?" Sophie asked politely, tilting the little pink wooden teapot over Evelyn’s cup.

"Oh, yes please, Lady Sophie," Evelyn replied with grand royal manners. "Two scoops of imaginary sugar, if you don't mind."

I walked over and sat down on the bench beside them. "How are you feeling, Evelyn? Be honest."

Evelyn closed her eyes for a moment, breathing in the fresh air, feeling the steady, strong beat inside her chest. She placed her hand over her heart—where Ryan’s initials were hidden beneath her clothes—and smiled.

"I feel lighter than I have in ten years, Laura," she said softly. "For so long, every morning I woke up, I felt like I was running out of time. Every tick of the clock was a reminder of what I was going to lose. Now... when I feel this little device pulse inside me, it doesn't feel like a medical machine. It feels like love."

I squeezed her hand. "Ryan spent months building that love."

"And you gave him the strength to do it," Evelyn said, looking at me with deep sincerity. "You built a wonderful husband, Laura. And a wonderful family."

Across the lawn, Ryan caught my eye. He waved, holding up a plate of perfectly cooked burgers, giving me that boyish, handsome grin that had made me fall in love with him in college.

I blew him a kiss.
