Chapter 4 - Desperate Moves

Grant’s desperation materialized sooner than expected. Denied access to funds and facing an impending freeze on corporate assets, he turned to the only weapon he thought he had left: public relations and manipulation.
On Tuesday afternoon, a glowing article appeared in a prominent local business tabloid. The article painted Grant as a visionary developer targeted by an unhinged, vengeful wife trying to sabotage an eighty-million-dollar deal out of jealousy over a harmless corporate friendship with Vanessa Lane. The piece conveniently left out the slap, the ruined party, and the forged documents.
“He’s playing the narrative game,” Sarah noted during our evening strategy call. “He wants to turn public opinion so the board doesn’t oust him before he can secure emergency private funding.”
“Then we stop playing defensively,” I stated firmly.
I decided it was time to step out of the shadows. I called an emergency meeting with the board of directors of Whitmore Development. Because my trust held a fifteen percent silent equity stake in the company—a detail Grant had consistently downplayed over the years—I had the legal right to request an extraordinary assembly.
The board meeting was set for Thursday morning in the penthouse boardroom of the Whitmore Building.
When I walked into the glass-walled room at 10:00 AM, clad in a tailored navy suit, the air was thick with tension. Ten corporate directors sat around the polished mahogany table. At the far end sat Grant, looking disheveled despite his custom suit. Dark circles shadowed his eyes, and his hair was uncharacteristically messy. Next to him sat his personal attorney, Richard Sterling.
Vanessa was nowhere to be seen; the board had banned her from entering the premises after learning of her involvement in the party scandal.
Grant stood up as I entered, his jaw tightening. “Claire, this is a board meeting for company executives. You have no business being here.”
“I own fifteen percent of this company, Grant,” I said, taking a seat at the center of the table, opposite him. “Which gives me more than enough right to address the board regarding the massive liability sitting in the CEO chair.”
“Liability?” Grant sneered, attempting to regain his classic arrogance. “I built this company from the ground up!”
“You built it on my family’s land and backed by my family’s trust,” I replied coldly. I opened my leather folder and produced a stack of bound documents, sliding them across the table toward the board members.
“What are these?” asked Arthur Pendelton, who was not only our former neighbor but also a senior advisor to the board.
“Those are certified copies of the original land titles for the Northside parcel,” I explained. “Along with a forensic handwriting analysis conducted yesterday by an accredited state expert. The signature on the title transfer submitted to the bank last week by Grant Whitmore is a confirmed forgery.”
A murmur of shock rippled around the table.
Grant’s attorney immediately leaned in, whispering frantically in Grant’s ear. Grant’s face twisted into an expression of raw venom. “This is a domestic dispute being dragged into corporate governance! My wife is emotional because of a personal misunderstanding!”
“Is a physical assault a misunderstanding, Grant?” I asked, tapping a button on my tablet.
The large presentation screen at the end of the boardroom flickered to life. The high-definition backyard footage began to play. The crisp audio echoed through the room: the sound of the slap, Lily’s crying, Vanessa’s hysterical accusations, and finally, Grant’s own voice demanding I apologize for something my daughter didn't do, followed by Vanessa’s loud declaration of the forgery.
The board members watched in utter silence. One female director covered her mouth in horror at the sound of the blow hitting my face.
When the video finished, I looked straight at the board. “Grant Whitmore has committed domestic assault, corporate forgery, and bank fraud. In less than forty-eight hours, Apex Global Capital will officially pull the loan for the hotel project. When they do, Whitmore Development will face default, immediate asset seizure, and catastrophic public disgrace.”
Arthur Pendelton looked up from the forensic report, his eyes heavy with disappointment. “Grant... is this true?”
Grant stammered, looking around the room at the men and women who had backed him for years. “It... it was a temporary measure! The deal was going to close! I was saving the company from missing a deadline!”
“You were saving your own ego,” Arthur corrected coldly. He looked toward the rest of the board. “I move for an immediate vote to suspend Grant Whitmore from his duties as CEO, pending a full internal audit and criminal investigation.”
“I second the motion,” another director called out instantly.
“You can’t do this!” Grant shouted, slamming his hands onto the table as he stood up. “I am Whitmore Development!”
“Not anymore,” I said softly.

The vote was unanimous. Grant was stripped of his executive powers on the spot, his access to company servers was revoked, and security guards were called to escort him off the property.
As he was led toward the elevator doors, he turned back to me, his eyes burning with a desperate, terrifying rage. “You think you’ve won, Claire? You haven’t seen anything yet. I’ll burn this whole place down before I let you take it!”
