Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

By 8:00 PM, the house was silent. Grant had left with Vanessa, screaming obscenities as he tore out of the driveway in his Mercedes, tires screeching against the asphalt.

Inside, my mother was in the kitchen, making a cup of chamomile tea while Lily sat on the couch, coloring quietly in a storybook. Her little eyes were still puffy, but the calm environment was slowly soothing her anxiety.

I sat at the dining table with my attorney, Sarah Jenkins, who had arrived twenty minutes after my call. Sarah was a formidable woman in her late forties, sharp-witted and relentless, specializing in high-stakes matrimonial law and asset protection. She had been monitoring Grant’s financial moves for six months at my request, but tonight’s events had accelerated everything.

“The slap was recorded clear as day, Claire,” Sarah said, reviewing the footage on my laptop screen. “We have clear physical assault, verbal abuse, and a direct, unforced confession of criminal fraud from his mistress.”

“What about the forged signature?” I asked, holding my bruised cheek with a cold ice pack.

“If he truly submitted forged land titles to secure the Whitmore Hotel deal, he hasn't just committed fraud against you; he’s committed federal banking fraud,” Sarah explained, her eyes gleaming with tactical focus. “The lender, Apex Global Capital, extended a forty-million-dollar commercial loan based on the premise that the land title was clear and encumbrance-free. If the title is invalid due to forgery, the loan is instantly defaulted, and the bank will call in their capital immediately.”

“Will Grant go to prison?”

“If we press criminal charges for the forgery and assault? It’s a distinct possibility,” Sarah said smoothly. “But first, we secure your safety and Lily’s custody.”

Sarah immediately filed for an emergency temporary restraining order (TRO) against Grant, utilizing the camera footage as evidence. By midnight, a judge had signed off on the order, legally barring Grant from coming within 500 feet of me, Lily, or the house.

The next morning, news of the backyard incident had already begun to circulate through the city’s elite social circles. Gossip spreads like wildfire when power falls. By 9:00 AM, my phone was ringing incessantly with calls from concerned friends, curious acquaintances, and board members of Whitmore Development.

I ignored them all, focusing instead on Lily. I made her favorite chocolate pancakes, played her favorite songs, and promised her that everything was going to be okay.

“Is Daddy mad at us?” Lily asked softly, her fingers tracing the edge of her syrup-covered plate.

I kneeled next to her chair and took her little hand. “Daddy made some very bad choices, sweetheart. But you did nothing wrong. The punch falling on that lady’s dress was an accident, and even if it wasn’t, no one is ever allowed to hurt us or call us liars. Okay?”

Lily nodded slowly, hugging her stuffed bear. “Okay, Mommy.”

At 11:00 AM, Sarah called me with an urgent update.

“Claire, we have a major development,” Sarah said, her voice taut with energy. “Grant just tried to access the family trust’s secondary liquid fund at First City Bank. He attempted to wire two million dollars to an offshore account in the Cayman Islands.”

My breath caught in my throat. “Did the bank clear it?”

“No,” Sarah smirked through the receiver. “Because I filed an emergency freeze on all joint and linked accounts at 8:00 AM today citing the pending TRO and fraud investigation. He’s completely blocked.”

“Where is he now?”

“He’s at his corporate office, trying to control the damage. But word is already getting out to the board. The construction site for the new hotel acquisition has been halted by the city inspectors because the title documentation has been flagged for audit.”

“He’s going to panic,” I murmured.

“Let him panic,” Sarah replied calmly. “A panicked man makes mistakes. And right now, Grant is digging his own grave faster than we could ever dig it for him.”
