Chapter 9 - The Grand Opening

Six months later, life had settled into a new, healthy rhythm.

With the Vance Holdings contract fully underway, my practice expanded, allowing me to hire two junior accountants and move into a sunlit office downtown. Diane had moved out of town to start over elsewhere, stripped of her influence over the family finances and forced to manage her own debts.

On a crisp October Saturday, we gathered in my backyard for Lucas and Mia’s eighth birthday party.

There was no private dining room, no expensive dress code, and no suffocating tension. We had ordered half a dozen sheet pizzas, set up folding chairs near the garden bed, and invited twenty of their classmates.

The backyard was full of laughter, the sound of children running through autumn leaves, and the warm smell of hot apple cider.

Dad sat on a wooden bench near the fence, watching the twins lead a group of friends around the garden. Mounted high on a cedar post near the oak tree was the small blue-and-yellow birdhouse. A pair of chickadees had taken up residence inside it three weeks earlier, flying in and out through the little hole Lucas had carefully sanded down.

Uncle Brett walked over, handing Dad a paper cup of cider. "Good afternoon for a party, isn't it?"

"The best," Dad said, his eyes following Mia as she ran past. "The absolute best."
