Chapter 8 - Rebuilding the Foundation

The money was returned to the trust account at 3:15 PM the following day. Diane had to sell her sports car and take out a personal loan to cover the deficit, but the ledger was balanced.
In the weeks that followed, the family dynamic shifted permanently. Aunt Carol and Uncle Brett made a point of visiting my home regularly, bringing home-cooked meals and helping out with the kids. The cousins who had sat silently at the dinner table sent handwritten letters of apology.
Dad came over alone on a Sunday afternoon. He didn't ask to come inside right away; he stood on the front porch for a long time, looking at the yard.
I opened the door and found him holding a wooden post and a set of brass screws.
"I heard Lucas wanted to put his birdhouse up," Dad said quietly, his eyes fixed on the grass. "I brought some tools. If... if that’s okay."

I looked at him for a moment. The anger had burned away, leaving only a clear-eyed boundary. He had failed my children that night at Bellisimo, and he knew it. He would never be able to undo it entirely, but he was finally willing to try.
"The kids are in the backyard," I said, stepping aside to let him pass. "Lucas has been waiting for someone to help him level the base."
