"What else?" I asked.

"I found a civil lawsuit from nine years ago. A worker on one of his construction sites sued him for physical assault. Your father settled it out of court for fifty thousand dollars. The victim signed an NDA, but the court filing of the initial complaint is public record."

I smiled, a cold, predatory smile. "This establishes a clear, decades-long pattern of violent behavior and anger management issues. The defense can't claim this was a one-time 'lapse in judgment' or a traditional 'disciplinary action' that went wrong."

The next day, my mother’s lawyer contacted Marcus Vance, offering a plea deal. They wanted the charges reduced to third-degree felony child abuse, with probation and community service. No jail time.

Marcus called me into his office to discuss it. "What do you want to do, Rebecca? A trial will be hard on your family. It will drag all of this into the public eye."

"Let it," I said, my voice steady. "We reject the plea. No deals. I want Gerald Hutchinson to stand trial. I want a jury of twelve citizens to look at the photos of my daughter's cracked skull and see him for the monster he is."
