Chapter 3 - The Trauma Bay and the Shield

The sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder until the flashing red and blue lights illuminated the front windows of my parents' house. The paramedics burst through the front door, carrying their heavy gear. I stepped back, giving them room, but my eyes never left my daughter.

"Three-year-old female, blunt force trauma to the occipital region, subsequent generalized tonic-clonic seizure lasting approximately two minutes, currently postictal and unresponsive," I reported to the lead paramedic, my professional vocabulary intact even as my heart hammered against my ribs.

The paramedic looked up, surprised by the clinical accuracy, and nodded. "Got it. Let's prep her for transport. We need to secure the airway."

As they worked on Lily, a police officer entered the kitchen. It was Officer Miller, a young man whose uniform looked slightly too big for him. He took in the scene—the blood on the floor, the crying child, and my father standing there with the belt now resting on the kitchen counter.

"What happened here?" Miller asked.

My father stepped forward, putting on his best 'respectable citizen' voice. "Officer, it was a terrible accident. The girl was running, she tripped on the wet tile near the cooler, and—"

"He struck her with that leather belt," I interrupted, my voice ringing out with absolute authority. I pointed to the belt on the counter. "My daughter took a soda without permission. Gerald Hutchinson struck her with a weapon, causing her to fall and strike her head on the tile. He is the perpetrator. Patricia Hutchinson and Vanessa Miller are eye-witnesses who condoned the assault."

My father’s face turned purple. "She’s lying! She’s always hated this family—"

"Officer," I said, stepping between the officer and my family. "My name is Rebecca Hutchinson-Ward. I am a former Senior Prosecutor for this county's District Attorney's office. I have photographed the crime scene, preserved the physical evidence, and recorded the immediate statements of the witnesses. I expect you to secure that belt as evidence immediately, secure the scene, and place Gerald Hutchinson under arrest for injury to a child, a first-degree felony."

Officer Miller blinked, clearly recognizing my name and realizing he was out of his depth. He immediately reached for his radio. "Dispatch, send a supervisor to this location. We have a felony child abuse situation, suspect on scene."

"Rebecca, how dare you!" Patricia shrieked. "He is your father!"

"I don't have a father," I said, not even looking back at her as the paramedics lifted Lily onto the gurney. "James, go with her in the ambulance. I’ll drive behind you."

"Rebecca, are you sure?" James asked, his eyes red and filled with tears.

"Go," I said, kissing his cheek. "I need to make sure the police do their job here. Then I’ll be right behind you."

I watched them wheel my little girl out. I turned back to the kitchen. Officer Miller was now standing near my father, instructing him not to touch the belt. My father looked bewildered, the realization that his status in this small town wouldn't protect him finally starting to crack his arrogant facade.

"You're going to regret this, Rebecca," Vanessa spat.

"No, Vanessa," I said, walking toward the door. "You are."
