Chapter 9 - Justice in the ValleyThe trial of Gregory Ross was swift, crushed under the weight of an unassailable mountain of physical and digital evidence.

Faced with capital murder charges and the prospect of life without parole, Greg’s defense quickly collapsed. His attempt to cover up the sabotage of Brennan’s truck using altered mill records was laid bare in court, line by line, by state investigators. Brenda, broken by guilt and facing severe accessory charges, agreed to testify against him in exchange for a plea arrangement.

When the verdict was read in late autumn, Greg was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. Brenda received a suspended sentence with mandated rehabilitation and community service, along with a permanent restraining order prohibiting her from approaching Hollis.

The community that had once whispered about my brother’s mysterious death rallied around his memory. The town council officially cleared Brennan’s name, honoring his twelve years of service at the mill, while the mill’s board of directors was forced to restructure its leadership entirely under state scrutiny.

With the legal storm finally silenced, Naira handed me the final, sealed decree from the state family court on a crisp November morning.

"It’s official, Cassian," Naira said, sitting on the tailgate of my pickup truck as the golden autumn leaves drifted around us. "Full legal adoption is finalized. She is officially your daughter in the eyes of the law, just as she has been in your heart since the night she walked up your driveway."

I looked down at the gold seal on the document. "Thank you, Naira. For everything."

"Don't thank me," she smiled, placing a warm hand on my shoulder. "Thank that stubborn little girl who knew exactly where to walk when the night got dark."
