Chapter 7 - Breaking the Boyfriend

The emergency hearing was moved up to Thursday afternoon.
Judge Miller’s courtroom was quiet, save for the hum of the air conditioning unit and the gentle rustle of paper. Brenda sat at the defense table in a washed-out floral dress, looking pale and restless. Beside her sat Greg, wearing an ill-fitting suit jacket over his broad shoulders. He glared at me across the central aisle, his heavy jaw clenched tightly.
Naira didn't wait for Brenda's defense attorney to lay out his motions. The moment Judge Miller called the court to order, Naira stood up and placed three heavy items on the timber bench:
The certified Hollis Vance Irrevocable Land Trust, stamped with Arthur Pendelton’s raised gold seal.
The forensic digital analysis of cloud server Dispatch Log #409, delivered directly by the State Attorney General’s office an hour prior.
The cut master lock from my workshop gate, sealed in a clear evidence bag.
"Your Honor," Naira began, her voice carrying an absolute, commanding authority. "We are no longer merely discussing temporary protective custody. We are presenting evidence of systematic grand fraud, witness intimidation, and child abandonment in the first degree."
Brenda’s attorney jumped up instantly. "Objection! Opposing counsel is bringing unverified materials into a family court petition!"
"Settle down, Counsel," Judge Miller warned, her sharp gaze locking onto the papers Naira had submitted. "Ms. Kenley, explain the relevance of Dispatch Log #409."
Naira picked up the digital printout. "This log, recovered from the remote server of Blackwood Sawmill, shows that on April 12th at 9:15 PM—less than three hours before Brennan Vance was found dead at the bottom of the ridge ravine—a maintenance request was authorized by Mr. Gregory Ross to drain and alter the hydraulic brake fluids on truck unit #04."
A heavy silence fell over the room.
Brenda turned her head slowly to look at Greg. Her lips parted, her eyes wide with shock. "Greg... you said Brennan was drunk. You said he took the truck out himself..."
"Shut your mouth, Brenda!" Greg barked, his face instantly turning a mottled red.
"Mr. Ross! One more outburst like that in my courtroom and you will be remanded into custody for contempt," Judge Miller warned sharply, slamming her gavel down once. She turned to Deputy Vance, who was standing quietly near the back door with two state troopers behind him. "Deputy, secure the doors."
Naira stepped directly in front of Greg's table.
"Mr. Ross, you knew Brennan had created an irrevocable trust for his daughter," Naira stated calmly. "You knew that as long as Hollis held title to that sixty-acre parcel, the Blackwood Sawmill expansion could not proceed, and your $250,000 finder's commission from the investment group would be completely nullified."
"You can't prove any of that!" Greg snarled, leaning over the table. "That log is a mistake! Mechanics mess up paperwork all the time!"
"Mechanics do," Naira replied smoothly. "But you aren't a mechanic, Greg. You used Brennan’s credentials to sign off on the work order—except you forgot one thing. The mill's cloud system logs the physical IP address of the terminal used to submit the order. That log came directly from the laptop sitting on your desk in the main office."
Greg sat back hard as if he had been struck in the chest. His eyes darted nervously toward the exit doors, where the two state troopers stood with their hands resting on their belts.
Beside him, Brenda began to sob, pulling her hands away from Greg's sleeve as if his skin burned her.
"You told me we were just getting her out of the way for a few days," Brenda wept, her voice trembling violently. "You said Cassian would take her and sign the release papers! You didn't tell me what you did to Brennan!"
"Brenda, shut up!" Greg yelled, half-rising from his chair.
"It's over, Greg," I said from behind my table, my voice low and steady. "The State Police are already executing a search warrant on your house and your workshop. They found the hydraulic fluid canisters in your shed two hours ago."
Greg’s knees seemed to give out, and he sank heavily back into his chair. He looked at the floor, all his bluster evaporating into thin, desperate silence.
Judge Miller didn't hesitate. She picked up her pen and signed three documents in quick succession.
"In light of the evidence presented," Judge Miller declared, her voice cold with disgust, "this court revokes all parental rights of Brenda Vance pending criminal charges. Full, permanent legal and physical custody of Hollis Vance is hereby granted to Cassian Vance."

She looked up, her gaze softening slightly as she looked at me.
"Mr. Vance, take your niece home."
