Chapter 6 - Sunrise at the Estate

The first rays of golden sunlight pierced through the sprawling oak trees surrounding the Moretti estate, casting long, warm shadows across the manicured lawns. Inside the master suite on the second floor, the room was quiet, bathed in the soft, comforting glow of a bedside lamp.
Chloe stirred beneath a mountain of heavy wool blankets. Her pale face had regained a hint of natural warmth, and her breathing was deep, steady, and entirely unobstructed. Dr. Alan, the veteran combat medic, had administered intravenous fluids and monitored her vital signs through the night, confirming that aside from mild exhaustion and trauma, the little girl was going to make a full physical recovery.
Sitting in a comfortable leather wingback chair beside the bed was Victor Moretti.
He held a warm cup of black coffee in his weathered hands, his eyes never leaving the small face resting peacefully on the pillow. The sharp, terrifying aura of the Bloody Baron had receded once more, replaced entirely by the quiet, weathered devotion of a grandfather who had stared into the abyss and pulled his blood back from the brink.
A soft knock sounded at the bedroom door.
Marcus Vance stepped inside, moving with absolute silence. He held a secure tablet in his hand, his expression calm and composed.
“Boss,” Marcus whispered respectfully.
Victor looked up, raising a hand to signal quiet before gently standing up from his chair. He walked over to the adjoining dressing room, motioning for Marcus to follow him inside. Once the door was closed halfway, Victor spoke in a low murmur.
“Status?”
“Federal agents executed the search warrants on Julian’s corporate offices at six o'clock this morning,” Marcus reported smoothly. “All accounts have been frozen, and the indictments for fraud, conspiracy, and child endangerment have been officially filed. The media is calling it the corporate scandal of the decade. Julian and Victoria won't see daylight for the rest of their natural lives.”
Victor nodded slowly, taking a sip of his coffee. “And Vane?”
“Vince tried to cut a deal with the FBI, offering up his entire syndicate network in exchange for witness protection,” Marcus said with a faint, grim smile. “Unfortunately for him, our legal team ensured that his offshore holdings were already transferred to the Chloe Moretti Trust Foundation an hour before his arrest. He’ll be spending his golden years in a supermax facility with zero assets left to his name.”
“Good,” Victor said flatly. “Make sure the trust is impenetrable. Set up an independent board of directors consisting of our most trusted legal advisors. Every cent Julian and Victoria tried to steal will be secured for Chloe’s future education and well-being.”
“It’s already done, Boss,” Marcus replied. He hesitated for a moment, shifting his weight before speaking again. “Boss... what about you? The estate is secure, the threat is neutralized, but you can’t stay here in isolation forever. The underworld knows the Bloody Baron has stepped out of retirement. Word travels fast.”
Victor looked past Marcus through the window, watching the morning mist rise off the vast gardens below. For years, he had tried to bury his past, believing that peace could be found by turning his back on who he was. But last night had taught him a harsh, undeniable truth: monsters didn't respect retirement. They only respected power.
“Let them talk, Marcus,” Victor said quietly, a faint, resolute spark returning to his dark eyes. “If my name is going to be whispered in the dark again, let it serve as a reminder to anyone who thinks they can harm my family.”
“Understood, Boss,” Marcus said, lowering his head in a final, deep bow. “We’ll maintain a round-the-clock security detail on the estate. No one gets within a mile of this property without our authorization.”
Marcus slipped out of the room, leaving Victor alone in the quiet dressing room.
Victor set his coffee cup down on the marble vanity, turned around, and walked back toward the bedroom. As he pushed the door open, he saw that Chloe’s eyes were wide open, staring up at the ceiling with a quiet, hesitant curiosity.
When she heard footsteps, her small head turned quickly toward the doorway.
For a second, a flash of fear crossed her pale face—the lingering ghost of the dark, velvet-lined box she had been locked inside just hours ago. But the moment she saw Victor standing there, the terror melted away, replaced by a profound, overwhelming wave of relief.
“Grandpa?” she whispered, her voice still raspy from the ordeal.
Victor smiled—a warm, genuine smile that he reserved for her alone. He walked over to the edge of the bed, sat down carefully on the mattress, and took her small, frail hand in his large, calloused palm.
“I’m right here, little bird,” Victor said softly, his voice thick with emotion. “I’m right here, and I am never, ever going to let anyone hurt you again.”
Chloe let out a long, shuddering breath, her fingers wrapping tightly around his thumb. She scooted up under the blankets, resting her head against his shoulder as Victor wrapped his strong arm securely around her.
“Can we stay here forever?” she asked softly.
Victor looked down at her, feeling a fierce, unbreakable protective warmth flood his chest. The Bloody Baron was back, but this time, he wasn't guarding an empire of fear. He was guarding his entire world.
May you like
“We can stay right here as long as you want,” Victor whispered, kissing the top of her head. “Everything is going to be okay.”
And for the first time in a very long time, the old man knew it was true.
