Chapter 10 - The Golden Sunset

The afternoon sun bathed the sprawling gardens of the Moretti estate in a rich, golden hue, casting long, peaceful shadows across the emerald-green lawns. The air was crisp and sweet with the scent of late-blooming roses, a stark contrast to the dark, stormy night that had changed their lives forever just weeks ago.
Chloe ran across the grass, her bright yellow dress catching the sunlight as she chased a colorful red-and-blue kite that danced playfully in the autumn breeze. Her laughter bubbled up into the clear sky, carefree and pure, untouched by the shadows of her past.
Sitting comfortably on a cushioned teakwood bench near the edge of the garden was Victor Moretti. He watched her run, a soft, content smile resting on his weathered face. He no longer wore the heavy cloak of the Bloody Baron; to the world outside, he was simply a devoted grandfather enjoying the autumn afternoon with his beloved granddaughter.
Marcus Vance stood a few paces away, keeping a discreet, watchful eye on the perimeter, though the serene stillness of the estate suggested no guards or threats would ever be needed here again.
Chloe suddenly stopped running, the kite string trailing behind her in the grass. She turned around, spotted Victor sitting on the bench, and ran toward him as fast as her small legs could carry her.
“Grandpa! Grandpa, look how high it went!” she called out breathlessly, rushing up to his side.
Victor opened his arms wide, catching her easily and lifting her up onto his lap. Chloe giggled, throwing her small arms around his neck and resting her head against his chest.
“I saw, little bird,” Victor said, his voice deep and warm with affection. “It flew higher than the highest tower in your castle.”
Chloe smiled brightly, looking up into his dark, kind eyes. “And nobody can ever pull it down, right?”
Victor wrapped his strong, protective arms around her, holding her close against the world.
May you like
“Nobody,” Victor promised softly, kissing the top of her head as the golden sun dipped slowly below the horizon, painting the sky in brilliant shades of orange and violet. “Never again.”
And in that quiet, peaceful moment, surrounded by the warmth of family and the safety of a home defended by love, the old king finally found his true rest.
