Chapter 4 - The Professional Shift

As the months rolled on, my reputation within the firm transformed dramatically. I was no longer just a competent senior engineer pushing papers; I was recognized as a reliable leader who could handle high-pressure crises without breaking a sweat.

When structural anomalies threatened to delay the terminal project, the junior engineers looked to me for guidance instead of panicking. I remembered what it was like to feel completely unsupported, drowning in stress with nobody to turn to. I made it a point to keep my office door open, mentoring the younger staff, reviewing their calculations with patience, and making sure their late nights were met with genuine gratitude and pizza.

"Iris, how do you stay so calm when everything is falling apart?" Maya, a brilliant twenty-four-year-old assistant engineer, asked me one afternoon as we reviewed a stress chart.

I smiled, leaning back in my ergonomic chair. "Because when you build your foundation right from the start, Maya, you don't have to worry about the wind shaking the walls. Trust your math, trust your preparation, and never let anyone make you feel small for knowing your own worth."

My financial situation blossomed alongside my career. I moved out of Monica’s spare room—though we remained inseparable best friends—and signed a lease on a gorgeous, sunlit loft apartment overlooking Dolores Park. From my living room window, I could see the rolling hills of the city, vibrant and alive. I no longer looked in the rearview mirror wondering if someone was chasing me. I was too busy looking forward at the horizon.
