Chapter 10 - The Horizon

Years later, I stood on the observation deck of a newly engineered skyscraper downtown—a massive, glittering tower that I had designed from the ground up as the lead principal structural engineer of my own firm.

The wind whipped softly through my hair as I looked out over the sweeping, endless view of the San Francisco bay meeting the Pacific Ocean. The sky was painted in brilliant shades of gold, amber, and violet, stretching out toward a horizon with no limits, no boundaries, and no restrictions.

My phone buzzed in my coat pocket. I pulled it out and looked at the screen.

A text from Dad: Checking in on you, sweetie. Hope you're having a wonderful week. Love you.

A text from Monica: Dinner at 8? Don't be late or I'm eating your dessert!

I smiled, typing back a quick reply to both of them.

My life wasn't defined by a sixty-thousand-dollar BMW parked in someone else's driveway, nor was it diminished by a two-dollar plastic toy wrapped in Christmas paper. My life was defined by the strength of my own foundations, the depth of my resilience, and the unshakeable freedom of knowing that I belonged to myself first.

I turned away from the glass railing, locked my office door behind me, and walked toward the elevator. The road ahead was wide, clear, bright, and entirely my own.
