Chapter 9 - The Trial's End and a New Beginning

The legal proceedings concluded swiftly and decisively.
Faced with overwhelming physical evidence, the video footage from the dining room, and the unyielding pressure of a special prosecutor backed by federal oversight, Jared Sterling’s defense attorney realized a trial would only result in a maximum sentence.
Two months after that fateful family dinner, Jared accepted a plea deal: guilty to felony assault in the third degree, resulting in a three-year prison sentence with no possibility of early parole, alongside mandatory anger management and a permanent restraining order protecting our family.
On the day of the sentencing, Claudia didn't even show up to the courtroom. Her social circle had completely dissolved, her elite friends quietly turning their backs on a disgraced name, and her massive estate was placed under court-supervised receivership to settle legal fees and honor the original family trust provisions fairly distributed to Sarah.
As we walked out of the courthouse steps for the final time, the autumn air had shifted into crisp, clean November breezes. The sky was an endless expanse of brilliant blue.
"Ice cream?" I asked, looking down at Lily, who was clutching a brand-new sketchpad in her arms.
Lily’s face lit up with an enormous, gap-toothed smile. "Can we get triple chocolate chip with rainbow sprinkles?!"
"Only if you promise to save me a bite," Sarah laughed, wrapping her arm tightly around my waist as we walked down the marble steps together.

For the first time in years, our lives felt entirely unburdened. The fear, the manipulation, and the toxic shadow of Claudia's dynasty were gone forever, replaced by the warm, unbreakable bond of a family that had survived the storm and emerged stronger, happier, and fiercely protective of one another.
We weren't just surviving anymore. We were truly, finally living.
