Chapter 10 - The House on the Hill

One year later, on a bright and sunny Saturday afternoon, we hosted a dinner party.
It was nothing like the suffocating, pretentious affairs at Claudia’s formal dining table. There was no crystal gravy boat, no starched lace tablecloths, and no walking on eggshells.
Instead, our backyard was filled with the warm, savory scent of barbecue, the bright laughter of Lily’s friends running across the green lawn, and the easy, joyful chatter of good people who genuinely loved and respected one another.
Arthur Vance sat at the picnic table, wearing a comfortable flannel shirt and a wide grin as he happily accepted a second helping of potato salad from Sarah.
"You know, Ryan," Arthur said, taking a sip of iced tea and looking out over the lively backyard. "I always knew you had backbone. But watching how you handled that night... I'm prouder of you and Sarah than words can say."
"We didn't do anything special, Arthur," I smiled, clinking my glass against his. "We just protected what mattered."
Across the yard, I watched Sarah sitting on the porch swing with Lily. They were laughing together over something silly drawn in Lily's sketchbook, their heads leaning close, wrapped in a bubble of absolute peace and unconditional love.
Life wasn't perfect, and no family ever is. But ours was built on truth, kindness, and safety—the kind of foundation that no amount of money, arrogance, or cruelty could ever shake.
As the sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the sky in gorgeous shades of gold and violet, Lily ran over, grabbed my hand, and pulled me toward the grass to join the game.

I looked back at Sarah, who smiled and raised her glass to me.
We had won. Not by fighting fire with fire, but by standing our ground, holding the line, and stepping out of the dark into a bright, beautiful, and happily earned future.
