Chapter 6 - Shadow Ingress

The night air over Midtown Manhattan was freezing and wet. Low gray clouds hung over the concrete jungle, reflecting the harsh yellow and neon lights of the city below.
At 2:15 AM, a plain black delivery van pulled into an alleyway three blocks from the Volkov Tower. Inside, Dominic and Mara were strapping on slick black tactical gear, checking their suppressed sidearms, communication earpieces, and breaching charges.
Sitting in the safehouse back in Lake Placid, guarded by Dominic's most trusted remaining veterans, Noah and Grace were safe. Before leaving, Mara had given Grace her silver pocket watch, promising she would return to collect it before breakfast.
"In-ear check," Dominic said, adjusting his headset.
"Clear," Mara replied, pulling a pair of night-vision goggles down over her forehead. "Central server access is ready on my wrist console. Once we reach the utility junction, I'll deploy the EMP charge to blind their local cameras for thirty seconds."
Dominic looked at her through the dim interior lights of the van. She looked fierce, lethal, and impossibly sharp. "Ready?"
"Always," she said with a disciplined nod.
They slipped out of the van and disappeared into the shadows of the alley, sliding open a heavy iron manhole cover and descending into the subterranean labyrinth of New York's steam utility network.
The heat underground was intense, the air thick with the smell of rust, damp earth, and ozone. Pipes hissed and groaned around them like giant steel beasts. They moved with silent, synchronized speed, navigating the dark tunnels using low-frequency sonar mapping on Mara’s wrist device.
Ten minutes later, they stood directly beneath the primary power junction of the Volkov Tower.
Above them was a reinforced steel hatch marked with high-voltage warning labels. Beyond that hatch was the private basement security grid for the entire skyscraper.
"Thirty seconds on the timer," Mara whispered, attaching a small, magnetic disk-shaped EMP charge to the main breaker conduit. "When this blows, the primary circuit will overload, triggering a ninety-second power reboot cycle. The private express elevator will default to emergency manual release on the 48th floor. That's our window."
"Dmitry will be with his father in the penthouse," Dominic said, checking his pistol's magazine one last time. "Mikhail won't run until he has his hard drives and physical bearer bonds from the floor safe. We catch him while he's packing."
Mara raised three fingers, then two, then one.
She pressed a button on her remote.
A high-pitched thrum echoed through the tunnel—a silent wave of electromagnetic energy that surged up through the conduit. Above them, the low hum of heavy industrial transformers instantly cut out. The lights through the ventilation grates went pitch black.
"Go!" Dominic grunted.
He threw his weight into the steel hatch, popping the heavy manual latches and swinging it open. They scrambled up into the dark utility room of the building.
Moving like twin ghosts, they sprinted down the silent, pitch-black service corridor toward the express elevator shaft. Mara produced a heavy mechanical crowbar, jammed it between the elevator's steel doors, and applied leverage. Dominic added his immense physical strength, straining until the heavy doors groaned and slid open with a screech of tearing metal.
The elevator car was trapped two floors above them. Below was an empty, black vertical drop; above were the thick steel cables hanging in the dark.
"Cables," Mara said without hesitation.
She leaped across the open gap, grabbing the grease-slicked steel cable with her tactical gloves, locking her boots around the wire. Dominic followed immediately behind her, his heavy grip securing him to the adjacent cable.
They climbed with terrifying speed, muscle and adrenaline driving them upward through forty-eight floors of vertical darkness. The air grew thinner and colder as they ascended, the sound of their disciplined breathing echoing inside the echoing concrete shaft.
Timer: 45 seconds remaining.
"Almost there!" Mara gasped softly, pointing up toward a tiny sliver of moonlight visible through the manual maintenance hatch of the 48th floor.
They reached the floor ledge. Dominic pulled himself up first, then reached down with one powerful arm, pulling Mara effortlessly over the lip. They knelt on the carpeted floor of the executive corridor, catching their breath for two seconds.
The entire floor was bathed in emergency red backup lighting. Silent alarms flashed silently along the ceiling molding.
"Reboot in fifteen seconds," Mara reported, checking her wrist console. "Security shutters will drop soon."
They moved down the silent executive hallway, past opulent marble statues, priceless oil paintings, and bulletproof glass partitions.
Up ahead, heavy mahogany double doors led to Mikhail Volkov's private penthouse suite. Light streamed through the gap at the bottom of the door, accompanied by furious, shouting voices in Russian.
Dominic met Mara’s eyes. He held up his hand, forming a fist, signaling for a hard breach.
Mara took two steps back, pulling two flashbang grenades from her belt. She pulled the pins simultaneously.
Dominic raised his heavy tactical boot.
"Reboot in three... two... one..." Mara counted down.
The main power returned with a deafening clack of heavy industrial relays. High-voltage lights flashed on, and automated steel shutters began sliding down from the ceiling frames with a loud, mechanical hiss.
Dominic slammed his boot against the lock of the mahogany doors. The heavy wood splintered and burst inward.
Mara tossed the flashbangs inside.
A blinding flash of white light and two concussive BANGS exploded inside the penthouse, shattering windows and throwing furniture across the room.

Dominic and Mara breached the smoke-filled room like a thunderbolt, weapons raised, sweeping the area with ruthless precision.
"Nobody move!" Dominic’s voice roared through the blinding smoke.
