Chapter 9 - The Gathering Under the Stars

The winter snow melted away, giving way to the brilliant, vibrant blooms of a Chicago spring. The Lake Forest estate was alive with birdsong, sunlight, and the joyous patter of tiny footsteps echoing across the hardwood floors. Noah, Lily, Jack, and Sophie had grown into healthy, radiant toddlers, full of laughter and boundless energy.

On a warm evening in late May, Ethan organized a private gathering in the expansive back gardens overlooking the lake.

It wasn't a high-society gala filled with wealthy donors and cold corporate partners. It was an intimate celebration of life, love, and healing.

Daniel Pierce was there, chatting warmly with Mrs. Gable and the household staff. Even Eleanor Whitmore was present, having undergone a profound humbling after her son's fierce defense of his home. She had apologized to Grace weeks earlier, and though their relationship remained formal, Eleanor had finally learned to respect the genuine love that now filled the Whitmore estate.

At the center of the garden stood Ethan and Grace.

Ethan wore a crisp white linen shirt, his sleeves rolled up, looking every bit the devoted father and grounded man he had become. Grace wore a flowing emerald-green summer dress, her smile radiant and completely at peace.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting a golden-pink glow across Lake Michigan, Ethan stepped forward, raising a glass of sparkling cider. He looked around at the small group of people who mattered most in the world.

"Thank you all for being here," Ethan began, his voice steady and rich with emotion. "For a long time, I believed that love was something you could protect with walls, money, and control. I thought if I built high enough and worked hard enough, I could keep tragedy out."

He turned his gaze toward Grace, who smiled back at him with sparkling eyes.

"I was wrong," Ethan continued, stepping closer to her. "Tragedy can't be locked out. But neither can healing. Because of Grace, this house stopped being a monument to grief and became a home filled with life, laughter, and truth. Claire gave me four incredible children. And Grace gave me my heart back."

The small group smiled, several wiping away happy tears.

Ethan reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box. He didn't make a grand corporate speech. He simply knelt down on one knee in the green grass of the garden, right where Claire's memory lived on through their children.

"Grace Holloway," Ethan said, looking up into her eyes. "You walked into my life when everything was broken, and you brought the light back in. Will you stay in this house, in this family, not just as our guiding light, but as my wife?"

Grace’s hands flew to her mouth, tears spilling over her eyelashes as a radiant, joyful smile broke across her face.

"Yes, Ethan," she whispered, her voice trembling with happiness. "Yes, a thousand times yes."

As Ethan slipped the ring onto her finger and stood to pull her into a passionate, loving embrace, the four toddlers came running across the grass, laughing and shouting, wrapping their tiny arms around both of their legs.

From the upstairs nursery window, a gentle breeze fluttered the white curtains, as if a quiet blessing was being whispered down from the stars.
