Chapter 6 - The Shadows of the Past

With Evelyn legally cornered and our home fortified, Sarah and I finally began to find our rhythm as parents. The house was quiet, peaceful, and filled with the soft, sweet cooing of baby Leo, who was growing stronger and healthier by the day.

Yet, healing is never a straight line.

One evening in late spring, as the sun dipped below the horizon and painted the Seattle skyline in shades of bruised purple and gold, I found Sarah sitting alone in the nursery in the dark.

The room was lit only by the soft glow of a star-shaped nightlight on the bookshelf. Sarah sat in the rocking chair, holding a sleeping Leo against her chest, staring blankly out the window.

I quietly pushed the door open and stepped inside, my footsteps muffled by the thick nursery rug. "Sarah? Honey? Are you okay?"

She didn't answer right away. She slowly turned her head, her eyes catching the dim light. A tear traced a solitary path down her cheek.

I knelt beside her rocking chair, resting my hands gently on her knees. "Talk to me. What's wrong?"

"I keep thinking about what she said, David," Sarah whispered, her voice trembling slightly. "Down there on the floor... when she pulled the bassinet away."

"Don't listen to her voice, Sarah. She was sick. She's a monster," I said, my chest tightening with protective anger.

"No, it's not just her voice," Sarah shook her head softly, looking down at our baby. "It's the fear that... what if I really am a burden? What if my body is too weak to be a real mother? What if something happens to me, and Leo grows up without anyone to protect him from people like her?"

The words broke my heart into a thousand pieces. I stood up, wrapped my arms around both of my wife and my son, burying my face in Sarah’s shoulder.

"Listen to me," I whispered fiercely, my voice thick with emotion. "You are the strongest, most resilient woman I have ever known. You survived a terrifying birth. You survived her cruelty. You are everything Leo needs, and you are everything I need. We are a team, Sarah. No one will ever hurt you in this house again. I swear it on my life."

Sarah leaned her head against mine, her breathing finally evening out as the tension slowly drained from her shoulders. "I know, David. I know you mean it. It just... it takes time for the body to trust that it's safe again."

May you like

"Take all the time you need," I murmured. "I'm right here. I'm not going anywhere."

That night, as I lay beside Sarah in our bed while Leo slept peacefully in his crib next to us, I realized that protecting my family wasn't just about locking doors or hiring lawyers. It was about creating an atmosphere of unconditional love and safety so profound that the ghosts of the past could no longer find a foothold.
