Chapter 5 - The Legal Wall

The weeks following Evelyn’s banishment were a slow, painful process of physical and emotional healing. Sarah returned home from the hospital, but the psychological scars ran deep. Every time a car door slammed outside, or the floorboards creaked in the hallway, I could see her tense up, her eyes darting toward the nursery door as if expecting the ghost of my mother to appear.
I knew that physical locks on our doors weren't enough. We needed a legal fortress.
I hired Marcus Vance, one of the top family law and privacy attorneys in Seattle, known for his relentless defense of clients facing severe harassment and domestic endangerment.
We sat in Marcus’s sleek glass-walled office downtown, the rain drumming a steady rhythm against the windows. Marcus flipped through the printed transcripts of my nursery camera footage, the medical reports from Dr. Alpert detailing Sarah's torn stitches, and sworn affidavits from Clara regarding Evelyn's verbal abuse.
"Mr. Miller," Marcus said, adjusting his tortoiseshell glasses and looking up at me with sharp, assessing eyes. "This is a textbook case of severe elder-initiated domestic endangerment and psychological abuse. Given that your wife was in a medically vulnerable state post-childbirth, your mother’s actions cross the line from toxic behavior into actionable criminal negligence and reckless endangerment."
"I want a permanent restraining order," I said firmly. "I want to ensure she can never come within five hundred yards of my wife, my son, or my home."
"Not only can we secure that," Marcus replied, a thin smile touching his lips, "but we can also file a civil protection order that carries immediate mandatory arrest consequences if violated. Furthermore, if she attempts any harassment online, through third parties, or via phone, we will escalate it to stalking charges."
"Do it," I instructed. "Spare no expense."
While Marcus set the legal machinery in motion, Evelyn didn't go quietly. True to her narcissistic nature, she refused to believe her son would actually cut her off permanently. When she realized I had blocked her phone number on every platform, she began a campaign of proxy warfare.
First, she called my extended aunts and uncles, painting herself as the victim of an ungrateful, brainwashed son and a manipulative daughter-in-law who had stolen me away. For a couple of weeks, my phone buzzed with text messages and voicemails from distant relatives demanding I "respect my mother" and "make peace."
I didn't argue with them. I sent every single one of them a single, standardized digital document: a summary of Sarah’s medical emergency, screenshots of the camera footage showing Evelyn pulling the bassinet, and a notice that anyone who aided Evelyn in breaching our privacy would be cut off immediately as well.
Silence followed across the extended family tree very quickly. Nobody wanted to be associated with cruelty once the undeniable proof was laid bare.
Next, Evelyn tried a more insidious tactic: she hired a local process server to ambush me outside my office building with a frivolous petition for "grandparent visitation rights," claiming she was being wrongfully denied access to her newborn grandson.

When the papers were handed to me in the lobby of my office building, I didn't panic. I simply walked upstairs, scanned the documents, and forwarded them directly to Marcus Vance.
Marcus laughed out loud when he saw them over our video call that afternoon. "Grandparent visitation? On what grounds? She has a documented police and medical record of endangering the mother's life in the presence of the infant within the last thirty days. A family court judge in Washington State will throw this out before she even finishes filing her petition. Leave her to me, David. I'll make sure her legal fees for this stunt bankrupt her."
