Chapter 3 - The Terminal Showdown

At Logan Airport, Terminal E was relatively quiet at 3:50 a.m., save for the few international red-eyes. Arthur and Sienna walked down the jet bridge toward the Boeing 777 bound for Zurich. Sienna was giggling, her fingers intertwined with his. On her wrist, my grandmother’s diamond tennis bracelet caught the harsh fluorescent lights of the corridor.
Arthur felt a surge of pure, unadulterated power. He had done it. He had pulled off the ultimate heist against the woman who had held him back—in his mind—for over a decade. He was no longer just the husband of the Sterling heiress; he was a self-made multimillionaire.
"Arthur, babe, are you sure she won't be able to freeze the accounts before we land?" Sienna whispered, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness as they approached the aircraft door.
"She's fast asleep, Sienna," Arthur scoffed, handing his first-class boarding pass to the flight attendant. "And even if she wakes up, she’s too stupid to understand where the money went. By the time she hires a lawyer, we'll be sipping champagne in St. Moritz. The money is routed through three layers of shell companies. It's untraceable to someone like her."
"I love you," she cooed, stepping into the cabin.
"I love our new life," Arthur corrected with a smug grin.
They found their seats in the exclusive first-class cabin. Arthur settled into his leather seat, immediately ordering two glasses of Dom Pérignon. He pulled out his passport and ticket, placing them in the seat pocket.
"Excuse me, sir?"
Arthur looked up, expecting the flight attendant with his champagne. Instead, two men in dark trench coats and a woman in a sharp navy suit stood in the aisle. They weren't wearing airline uniforms. They wore tactical lanyards with gold badges.
"Arthur Vance?" the woman asked. Her voice was calm, but it carried the weight of a sledgehammer.
Arthur's smile faltered. "Yes? Is there a problem with our seats?"
"I am Special Agent Vance with the FBI," she said, showing her credentials. "And these are officers from the Massachusetts Port Authority Police. We need you and Ms. Brooks to step off the aircraft immediately."
Sienna gasped, clutching Arthur’s arm. "Arthur? What is this? Tell them who you are!"
"There must be some mistake," Arthur said, his voice rising, though a cold sweat was already breaking out across his forehead. "I am the managing partner of Vance & Sterling. We are traveling on business."
"Mr. Vance, your passport has been flagged as revoked by the Department of State," Agent Vance replied. "Furthermore, we have a federal warrant for your arrest on charges of grand larceny, bank fraud, wire fraud, and identity theft."
"That's impossible!" Arthur yelled, standing up. The other passengers in first class began to whisper and stare. "I haven't committed any fraud! My accounts are perfectly legal!"
"You might want to check your phone, Mr. Vance," the agent said coolly.
With trembling hands, Arthur pulled out his phone. He opened his banking app. The screen, which only five minutes ago had shown a balance of $42 million in his Cayman account, was now completely blank. In its place was a single, bold, red message:
ACCOUNT FROZEN BY ORDER OF THE UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT.
"No... no, no, no!" Arthur muttered, frantically tapping the screen. "This is a glitch. It's a banking error!"
"It's not an error, Arthur," Sienna screamed as a police officer stepped forward and grabbed her arm, pulling her out of her seat. "What did you do? Where is the money?"
"Keep your hands off her!" Arthur yelled, but before he could move, the two male officers grabbed his arms, forcing them behind his back. The metal of the handcuffs was ice-cold against his wrists.
"Arthur Vance, you are under arrest," Agent Vance read him his rights as they led him down the aisle of the plane, past the shocked faces of the first-class passengers.
Sienna was sobbing violently, her designer sunglasses falling to the carpeted floor of the jet bridge, trampled under the boots of the arresting officers. "Arthur, you promised me! You said she was useless! You said she didn't know anything!"
Arthur didn't answer. His mind was spinning in a vortex of panic and disbelief. How had Eleanor done this? She was supposed to be asleep. She was supposed to be weak.
As they walked out of the jet bridge and into the terminal, Arthur saw a figure standing near the security checkpoint.
It was Marcus, my accountant. He was holding a tablet, a calm, satisfied expression on his face. He caught Arthur’s eye, raised his hand in a polite wave, and tapped his screen.

A second later, Arthur’s phone—which was now in the custody of Agent Vance—buzzed with one final automated notification from the Sterling Trust:
“Access Denied. All powers of attorney revoked. Have a safe flight back to reality.”
