Chapter 10 - The True Fortune

Two years later.

The grand opening of the Sterling Community Housing Project was a massive success. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was attended by the mayor, community leaders, and dozens of families who were moving into their beautiful new homes.

I stood in the courtyard of the main building, watching children play on the newly installed playground.

A pair of warm hands gently rested on my shoulders. I leaned back against David's chest, smiling as he wrapped his arms around me.

"We did it, Ellie," he whispered, kissing the top of my head. "It’s perfect."

"We did," I agreed, looking down at my hand. On my finger, a simple, elegant sapphire ring caught the sunlight. It wasn't a flash of ostentatious wealth like the diamonds Arthur had used to show me off. It was a symbol of a deep, quiet, and equal love. We were getting married in the fall—a small, private ceremony with only our closest friends.

My phone buzzed in my pocket. I pulled it out and saw an email from my attorney, Elizabeth.

“Eleanor, just a quick update. Arthur Vance’s petition for an early parole hearing has been officially denied. The judge cited his continued lack of cooperation in locating some minor missing assets (which we’ve already recovered, anyway). He will serve the full remainder of his twelve-year sentence. Thought you’d like to know.”

I stared at the screen for a moment.

Twelve years. Arthur was sitting in a federal cell, counting down the days of a life he had ruined with his own greed.

I looked up at the children laughing on the playground, at the beautiful community we had built, and at David, whose eyes were filled with nothing but love and respect for me.

I put my phone back in my pocket. I didn't chuckle this time. I just smiled, took David's hand, and walked forward into the bright, beautiful future I had built for myself.

I was no longer the woman who was stripped of her assets. I was the woman who had realized that her true assets—her strength, her intelligence, her heart, and her capacity to love and be loved—could never be stolen.
