Chapter 3 - The Awakening and the Oath

The morning light began to filter through the blinds of the hospital room, casting long, dusty stripes across the floor. Dr. Reeves returned during my rounds, flanked by a nurse carrying a clipboard. He checked my vitals, shone a small penlight into my eyes, and offered a genuine smile of relief.
"Your recovery is miraculous, Ava," Dr. Reeves said, writing notes down on my chart. "Given the severity of the rupture and the brief cardiac arrest, your resilience is astounding. You'll need at least a week of strict bed rest once you're discharged, but you are officially out of the woods."
I glanced at Daniel, who had stood up respectfully when the doctor entered and now stood quietly by the window.
"Doctor," I said, my voice gaining a bit more strength. "What happens to my belongings? My phone? My apartment keys?"
"They're locked in the nurses' station safe," Dr. Reeves replied. "Along with your phone. Which, by the way, hasn't stopped buzzing since sunrise. Dozens of missed calls and text messages from a number registered to a Margaret Bennett."
A heavy silence fell over the room. I didn't want to look at the phone. I didn't want to hear the toxic guilt-trips disguised as maternal concern—complaints about how my medical emergency had ruined Chloe's baby shower, how inconvenient I was, how selfish I had been for getting sick on a weekend.
"Ignore them," I said firmly, surprising even myself with the cold resolve in my tone. "Dr. Reeves, I need to make a formal statement. No one by the name of Margaret or Robert Bennett is permitted in this room. Furthermore, they have no legal authority over me."
Dr. Reeves raised an eyebrow, glancing at Daniel, then back to me. "Are you certain, Ava? Family disputes can get complicated, but as an adult, your word is final."
"I am entirely certain," I said, looking straight into the doctor's eyes. "In fact, I want Mr. Price here to be listed as my primary emergency contact and healthcare proxy."
Daniel’s breath hitched. He stepped forward, his eyes shining with unshed tears. He didn't say a word, but the look he gave me conveyed a lifetime of lost devotion rushing back to the surface all at once.
"Consider it done," Dr. Reeves said kindly, updating the digital tablet in his hand. "I'll notify security immediately. If anyone by that name shows up, they won't even make it past the lobby."
After the medical staff departed, leaving us in a quiet cocoon of safety, Daniel pulled his chair closer.
"You don't have to carry this alone anymore, sweetheart," he murmured, using a term of endearment that sounded so foreign yet so profoundly right. "I know this is a lot to process. Your entire world has been upended in less than twelve hours. But I promise you, I spent twenty-four years looking for you. I'm not going anywhere now."

"I believe you," I whispered, reaching out a trembling hand. Daniel immediately caught it in his large, warm palm, wrapping his fingers around mine with a gentle, unbreakable strength. "Take me home with you, Daniel. Anywhere... just not back there."
"My home is your home, Ava," he replied softly. "And we are going to make sure those people never hurt you again."
