Chapter 10 - The Horizon of Forever

Five years passed in the blink of an eye.

The old timber farmhouse had evolved. Wildflowers still bloomed across the meadows, but now they framed a sprawling, beautiful garden where Daniel spent his autumns growing heirloom tomatoes and crisp apples. My design agency had grown into a respected boutique firm, allowing me to mentor young designers who, like me once upon a time, just needed someone to believe in their potential.

On a crisp October morning—the exact five-year anniversary of the night my life changed forever—I stood on the front porch, holding a steaming mug of coffee.

My phone buzzed in my pocket. I pulled it out, expecting a client email or a notification from one of my design leads. Instead, it was an alert for a calendar reminder I had set a year ago: Check-in with yourself.

I smiled, turning off the alarm.

The contrast between that terrifying night five years ago and my life today was staggering. Then, my phone had been a source of sheer terror and isolation—seventeen unanswered calls to people who didn't care if I lived or died, culminating in a cruel text message prioritizing a party over my survival.

Now, my phone was just a tool. A device for creativity, connection, and joy.

Daniel stepped out onto the porch, wearing his familiar worn gray jacket—though he had finally agreed to let me buy him a new one for Christmas—holding two fresh mugs of coffee. He handed one to me and leaned against the railing beside me, looking out over the golden autumn landscape.

"Penny for your thoughts, boss lady?" Daniel teased gently, using the nickname his team at the workshop had given me.

"Just thinking about how fast time flies," I said, leaning my shoulder against his. "And how grateful I am."

Daniel smiled, his eyes warm and crinkling at the corners. "Me too, kiddo. Me too."

We stood there in comfortable silence, watching the morning mist burn off the distant hills, listening to the birds sing their morning song.

My name is Ava Bennett. Or rather, Ava Price. I survived the darkest night of my life, walked through the fire of betrayal, and found my way home to the arms of a father who loved me before I even knew his name.

Life isn't always fair, and storms will always come. But as I stood there in the golden sunlight, wrapped in the safety of a love that could never be broken, I knew one thing with absolute certainty:

I was finally, beautifully, and forever safe.
