Chapter 6 - The Confrontation in Room 418

By the time I returned to the fourth floor, the first pale rays of dawn were breaking through the windows, painting the sky in shades of pink and gold. But the atmosphere on the floor was anything but peaceful.
As I approached Room 418, I heard raised voices.
I quickened my pace. Inside the room, Daniel Mercer was standing over Claire's bed. He was a tall, sharply dressed man, but his expensive suit was rumpled, and his face was twisted in an ugly, desperate sneer. Dr. Cole stood near the door, his arms crossed, looking anxious.
"You don't know what you're talking about, Claire!" Daniel snapped, his voice tight with suppressed rage. "You were heavily medicated. The doctor says your perception of time was warped. Noah was born before midnight. It’s settled. The paperwork is being processed."
"It's not settled, Daniel," Claire said, her voice shaking but resolute. "I know when my son was born. I heard the bells. And Emma saw the bracelets."
Daniel turned his fury toward Emma, who was cowering near the window. "Emma! What did you do? Where did you put those bands? Did you steal them?"
"Leave her alone, Daniel!" Claire screamed.
"I am her father, Claire! I have a right to know what she did with hospital property!"
"You are not her father," I said, stepping into the room and closing the door firmly behind me.
Daniel spun around, his eyes locking onto my clipboard. "You. The nurse from last night. Cole told me you’ve been interfering with medical records. I want you out of this room, and I want the voided bracelet you stole from my daughter."
"I didn't steal anything, Mr. Mercer," I said, walking over to Claire's side and placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "I secured evidence of a federal crime. Both the physical bracelet showing the true birth time of 12:07 a.m. and the complete, unalterable digital audit trail of Dr. Cole's fraudulent modification."
Dr. Cole’s face drained of color. "Rachel, you are playing with fire. You have no authority—"
"I have the authority of the law, Dr. Cole," I interrupted. "I have already downloaded the system logs. We know Eleanor Mercer was declared brain-dead at 11:59 p.m. We know Noah was born eight minutes after she died. Changing those thirteen minutes is grand larceny, fraud, and a violation of medical ethics that will strip you of your license and put both of you in federal prison."
Daniel took a threatening step toward me. "Do you have any idea who I am? I can destroy your career with a single phone call. I can make sure you never work in a hospital again."
May you like
"Go ahead and make the call, Daniel," Claire said, her voice stronger than it had been all night. "Because the moment you do, I will call the police, the medical board, and every news outlet in this city. I will tell them exactly how my husband tried to gaslight me and abuse my daughter to steal his dying mother's money."
Daniel stared at his wife, shocked by her sudden defiance. For the first time, I saw a flicker of genuine fear in his eyes. He was a bully, and like all bullies, he didn't know what to do when his victims stopped being afraid.
