Chapter 4 - A Mother's Awakening

I slipped back down to the fourth floor, my mind racing. I needed to see Claire Mercer. She was the mother, the one who had endured hours of agonizing labor, the one whose memories of the birth were being systematically erased by her own husband and doctor.

When I entered Room 418, the room was dimly lit. The only sound was the soft, rhythmic breathing of baby Noah, who lay asleep in his plastic bassinet beside the bed. In the corner, on the small vinyl pull-out chair, Emma was curled up, pretending to sleep, but I could see the tension in her small shoulders.

Claire Mercer was stirring. The epidural and the post-delivery sedatives were slowly wearing off. She groaned softly, her hand reaching out blindly toward the bassinet.

"Noah..." she whispered, her voice cracked and dry.

I quickly moved to her side, pouring a cup of water and placing a straw to her lips. "Easy, Claire. Sip slowly. You're safe. You're in your room."

She drank greedily, then leaned her head back against the pillows. Her pale face was framed by damp, dark curls. "Rachel... is he okay? Is Noah okay?"

"He's perfect, Claire. He's sleeping soundly," I reassured her, checking the IV line in her arm. "How are you feeling?"

"Tired... so tired. My head feels like it's full of cotton." She looked toward the window, where the sky was just beginning to turn a deep, pre-dawn indigo. "What time is it?"

"It's just after 3:15 in the morning," I said gently.

Claire frowned, her brow furrowing in deep concentration. "The baby... when was he born? Daniel told me it was before midnight. He said I made it just in time. But... Rachel, I remember looking at the clock on the wall. I remember hearing the bells from the church down the street strike midnight. I remember the nurse saying 'Happy New Day' right before they placed him on my chest."

I pulled a chair closer to her bed and sat down, taking her cold hand in mine. "Claire, I need you to listen to me very carefully. Your memory is not playing tricks on you. You did hear the midnight bells."

She blinked, tears welling in her eyes. "Then why did Daniel scream at me? He said the medicine made me hallucinate. He said if I kept telling people the wrong time, the doctors would think I was having a postpartum breakdown and take Noah away from me."

My blood ran cold. The psychological abuse Daniel was inflicting on his wife to protect his stolen inheritance was monstrous.

"He's lying to you, Claire," I said, my voice low and fierce. "Noah was born at 12:07 a.m. I saw the original chart. I have the original birth bracelet that was printed right after he was born. Your husband and Dr. Cole changed the record to 11:54 p.m."

Claire’s breath hitched. She looked over at Emma, who had sat up on the cot, watching us with wide, solemn eyes.

"Why?" Claire whispered. "Why would he do that?"

"Because your mother-in-law, Eleanor, was declared legally dead at 11:59 p.m.," I explained. "The trust requires Noah to be born during her lifetime to inherit the estate. By changing those thirteen minutes, Daniel secured the money. But to do it, he has to make everyone believe you are crazy."

Claire stared at me, the truth washing over her like a freezing wave. The confusion in her eyes slowly hardened into a cold, protective rage.

"He's always done this," she whispered, her voice shaking. "He always makes me feel like I'm the one who's broken. When we married, he promised to adopt Emma. But he never did. He said she wasn't a 'real' Mercer. Now he wants to use my son to steal a fortune, while making me look insane."

She gripped my hand with surprising strength. "Rachel, you can't let them get away with this. Please. Protect my children."

"I will," I promised. "But we need to act fast. Before the morning shift starts, and before Daniel and Dr. Cole realize we are onto them."
