Chapter 6 - The Long Recovery

The next forty-eight hours were a critical trial for baby Ella. The combination of the head trauma and the toxic drug levels required round-the-clock intensive care. Lena barely left the pediatric unit, personally monitoring Ella’s vitals and working closely with the pediatric neurosurgery team.
Sarah remained by her daughter’s bedside every single second. With the truth revealed, Sarah’s parents rushed to the hospital from out of state, offering their unwavering support. Surrounded by love and vindicated of all wrongdoing, the heavy dark cloud of postpartum depression that had suffocated Sarah for months began to lift, replaced by a fierce, maternal protective instinct.
On the third day, the swelling in Ella’s brain began to subside significantly. The neurosurgeon confirmed that no permanent surgical intervention would be required; the infant's brain was healing remarkably well, thanks to the quick response of the medical team on the night she was brought in.
Lena walked into the private room on the fourth morning. Sunlight was streaming through the big windows, filling the room with warm, golden light.
Sarah was sitting in a rocking chair, holding Ella against her chest. The baby was awake, her large blue eyes clear, bright, and focused. She was nursing quietly, her small hand resting gently against her mother’s collarbone.
"Look at her," Lena said softly, stepping inside with a bright smile. "She looks like a completely different baby."
Sarah looked up, tears of joy sparkling in her eyes. "Dr. Ward... Lena. I don't know how to thank you. If you hadn't questioned the timeline, if you hadn't found that piece of prescription label..."
"You don't need to thank me, Sarah," Lena said gently, checking Ella’s temperature and heart rate. "I just listened to what the evidence was telling me. A mother’s love isn't defined by how perfect she is; it's defined by how much she cares. You never stopped caring for Ella, even when they were trying to break your mind."
"I thought I was going crazy," Sarah confessed, her voice thick with emotion. "Every time Ella cried, Mark and Diane made me feel like I was failing. They kept telling me I was dangerous, that I was losing my mind. I started believing them."
"Gaslighting is a powerful and destructive weapon," Lena said firmly. "They used your vulnerability against you. But you are strong, Sarah. You survived them, and so did Ella."
Detective Vance entered the room quietly, carrying a cup of coffee and a thick file. He smiled gently at the baby before turning to Sarah.
"I thought you’d like an update on the legal proceedings," Vance said. "The prosecutor’s office has filed formal charges against both Mark and Diane Morgan. Attempted murder, grand felony child abuse, evidence tampering, and conspiracy."
"Will they get bail?" Sarah asked, a faint tremor of fear in her voice.
"Denied," Vance said firmly. "The judge viewed the nursery video footage during the arraignment morning. He was so appalled that he ordered them both held without bail until trial. Furthermore, the court has issued a permanent, absolute restraining order prohibiting either of them from ever contacting or coming near you or Ella again."
Sarah let out a deep, cleansing breath. For the first time in months, her shoulders dropped, and she felt the crushing weight lift completely off her chest.
"What about the financial trust?" Sarah asked.
"Your father’s legal team has already taken action," Vance replied. "Mark has been stripped of all fiduciary rights over Ella's trust, and divorce proceedings have been initiated under grounds of extreme cruelty and criminal endangerment. He won't receive a single penny."
Ella let out a soft, contented coo, reaching her tiny fingers out toward Lena. Lena leaned down and let the baby wrap her tiny hand around her finger. The baby’s grip was surprisingly strong.

"She’s a fighter," Lena smiled.
"She gets it from her mother," Vance added with a warm nod.
