Chapter 10 - The Sunlight of Tomorrow

Five years after the incident in the emergency department.

It was a brilliant summer morning at the seaside park. The sun sparkled across the deep blue ocean, and a warm breeze rustled the leafy oak trees overhead.

A large blanket was spread across the grass. On it sat a six-year-old Ella, her bright blonde hair tied back in two bouncy pigtails. She was busily drawing a colorful picture with crayons on a large pad of paper. Beside her sat her little baby brother, Leo—eighteen months old—laughing happily as he tried to catch a red ball that Ella rolled back and forth to him.

Sarah and David sat on the bench nearby, holding hands and watching their children play. Sarah looked completely at peace, her face full of health, beauty, and deep content.

A car parked near the curb, and Lena stepped out, wearing comfortable weekend clothes and sunglasses.

"Auntie Lena!" Ella shouted the second she saw her, dropping her crayons and sprinting across the lawn at full speed.

Lena caught the six-year-old in a big hug, lifting her up high in the air. "Look at you! You grew another three inches since last month!"

"I'm six now!" Ella announced proudly, showing six fingers. "And I can ride my bike without training wheels!"

"No way!" Lena gasped in dramatic awe. "Show me!"

Sarah and David walked over, greeting Lena with warm hugs. Little Leo crawled over to Lena's shoes, pulling himself up on her jeans with a bright, toothy grin.

"How are things at the ER?" Sarah asked as they all sat down together on the picnic blanket.

"Busy as always," Lena smiled, watching Ella gently teach her little brother how to stack plastic rings. "But days like today make it all worth it."

Ella proudly handed Lena the drawing she had been working on. Lena took the paper and held it up.

It was a drawing of a bright yellow sun beaming down on a house. In front of the house stood five people, all holding hands: Sarah, David, little baby Leo, Ella herself, and right next to Ella, wearing a white coat and a smiling face, was Dr. Lena.

At the top of the paper, written in big, colorful crayon letters, were the words:

MY FAMILY.

Lena felt a warm lump form in her throat as she looked at the drawing. She looked at Sarah, whose eyes were shining with gentle tears of happiness.

"It’s perfect, Ella," Lena whispered softly, hugging the little girl tight. "It’s absolute perfection."

The dark, stormy night at 2:17 in the morning, filled with fear, poison, lies, and emergency room alarms, was now nothing more than a distant memory—a shadow completely swallowed by the bright, unyielding light of a happy ending.

Ella was safe, loved, and whole. Sarah was free, empowered, and deeply cherished. And as the family laughed together under the warm summer sun, the future stretched out before them—bright, beautiful, and full of endless hope.
