Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Hallway

My first two weeks at Cole Industries were a whirlwind of training, learning new software, and adjusting to a professional routine. It was exhausting, but for the first time in my life, it was a healthy kind of exhaustion. Every evening, I came home to Maya and Sophie, my pockets full of financial security. I paid off my overdue utility bills, bought fresh groceries, and even managed to put a few hundred dollars into a savings account for Sophie.

But working in the same building as Derek was like walking through a minefield.

He didn't dare speak to me directly after Ethan's warning, but I felt his eyes on me whenever our paths crossed in the cafeteria or the lobby. He was paranoid. He believed I had targeted his company on purpose, and he was terrified I would expose his secret to the executives.

One afternoon, during my lunch break, I was sitting in a quiet corner of the building's outdoor courtyard, enjoying the crisp winter air.

"Mind if I join you?"

I looked up to see Ethan standing there. He wasn't wearing his suit jacket, just a crisp white shirt with the sleeves rolled up, holding two cups of hot cider.

"Mr. Cole," I said, starting to stand.

"Please, call me Ethan when we aren't in formal meetings," he said, sitting on the stone bench opposite me and handing me a cup. "How are you adjusting, Clara?"

"It's... it's incredible, Ethan," I said sincerely. "The team is wonderful. The work is challenging, but I love it. And Sophie... Sophie has a pediatrician appointment tomorrow, and for the first time, I don't have to worry about how I will pay the co-pay. I can't thank you enough."

"You earned this job, Clara," Ethan said, his eyes warm. "I merely opened the door. You walked through it on your own merit."

We sat in silence for a moment, sipping our cider. There was a comfortable, easy connection between us that defied our different social statuses.

"I wanted to apologize for Derek," Ethan said softly. "I know having him in the same building must be stressful. If it becomes too difficult, I can have him transferred to our Chicago office."

"No," I said quickly. "Please don't do that on my account. I don't want to run away from him anymore. I spent seven months feeling ashamed and afraid. Working here, doing well, and ignored him... it feels like I'm taking my power back."

Ethan looked at me with deep admiration. "You are an incredibly strong woman, Clara."

"I have to be. For Sophie."

"And what about you?" Ethan asked, his voice dropping to a lower, more intimate register. "Who is strong for you?"

The question caught me off guard. I looked into his grey eyes and felt a sudden, electric spark of attraction. It was terrifying but beautiful. Before I could answer, my phone buzzed with a text message.

It was from an unknown number.

We need to talk, Clara. Meet me in the parking garage after work today. If you don't show up, I'll make sure everyone in HR knows you used a fake story to get hired through the CEO's personal favor.

May you like

I felt a chill run down my spine. I knew exactly who it was.

Derek.
