Chapter 4 - An Unexpected Desk

The lobby of Cole Industries was a soaring atrium of glass, steel, and polished white marble. It looked like a cathedral of modern commerce. Well-dressed executives and hurried assistants bustled across the floor, their footsteps echoing softly.
Maya sat in one of the plush leather chairs near a giant indoor waterfall, holding a sleeping Sophie in her arms.
"You look amazing," Maya whispered, giving me a reassuring squeeze of my hand. "Go get what's yours. We'll be right here."
I took a deep breath, smoothed down my borrowed blazer, and walked up to the security desk. After showing my ID, I was given a visitor's badge and escorted to the 14th floor—the Human Resources division.
The interview was a blur. Ms. Aris, the HR director, was a sharp, no-nonsense woman who began the meeting with a neutral expression. But as we began to talk about patient care, medical coding, and the realities of handling sensitive patient data, her demeanor softened. My experience as a CNA gave me a practical understanding of medical files that most administrative applicants lacked.
"Your practical knowledge is outstanding, Clara," Ms. Aris said, reviewing my resume. "But I must ask... there is a gap here. From August of last year until recently."
My throat tightened. "My daughter was born ten weeks premature," I said honestly, looking her straight in the eye. "She spent six weeks in the NICU. I spent every day by her side. My previous employer was unable to accommodate the emergency leave, so we parted ways. But my daughter is now healthy, thriving, and I am fully prepared to dedicate myself to this role. I have reliable childcare, and I am highly motivated."
Before Ms. Aris could respond, the door to the conference room opened.
Ethan Cole walked in.
He was wearing a tailored charcoal suit that made him look incredibly commanding, yet when his eyes met mine, the cold, corporate facade melted into a warm, supportive nod.
"Mr. Cole," Ms. Aris said, immediately standing up. "We were just discussing Clara's background."
"Please, sit," Ethan said, taking a seat at the head of the glass table. "I've reviewed Clara's file myself. Clara, I understand you have a strong understanding of our medical billing systems?"
"Yes, Mr. Cole," I said, my voice steadying. "I completed my certification during my pregnancy, and I am familiar with the ICD-10 coding systems, as well as electronic health record management."
Ethan turned to Ms. Aris. "How does her profile compare to our current openings?"
"Honestly, Mr. Cole," Ms. Aris said, "she is overqualified for the basic clerk position. We actually have a vacancy for a Senior Medical Billing Coordinator on the 10th floor. The previous coordinator left last week, and we've been struggling to find someone who understands both the clinical side and the administrative side. Clara has both."
My heart leaped into my throat. Senior Coordinator? That position surely paid twice as much as the clerk role.
"Then I think the decision is clear," Ethan said, a small smile playing on his lips. He looked at me. "Clara, if you are willing, we would love to offer you the position of Senior Medical Billing Coordinator. It comes with a competitive salary, full medical and dental benefits starting immediately, and a flexible hybrid schedule once your training is complete."
Tears pricked the corners of my eyes. I blinked them back, determined to remain professional. "Thank you, Mr. Cole. Ms. Aris. I accept. I won't let you down."
"I know you won't," Ethan said softly, his eyes holding mine for a beat longer than necessary.
After signing the preliminary paperwork with Ms. Aris, I walked out of the conference room feeling as though I were floating on air. I had a job. A real, high-paying job with health insurance for my daughter. We were going to be okay.
I took the elevator down to the 10th floor to see my new department and meet the team leader. The floor was bustling with activity. As the HR representative escorted me down the hallway to show me my new desk, a voice shattered my joy.
"Clara?"
I froze.
Standing near the water cooler, holding a stack of financial reports, was Derek Vance.
He looked exactly the same—tall, handsome in a conventional, polished way, with his styled brown hair and expensive watch. But his face was pale, his eyes wide with a mixture of shock and immediate anger.
"What are you doing here?" Derek demanded, stepping forward, his voice a harsh whisper. He looked around frantically to see if anyone was watching. "How did you get in this building? Are you tracking me?"
"I am here for an interview, Derek," I said, keeping my voice calm and professional, though my heart was hammering against my ribs. "And I was just hired."
Derek’s face contorted into a sneer. "Hired? You? As what, a janitor? You don't belong here, Clara. If you think you're going to use this to get money out of me, or to ruin my reputation here, you're dead wrong. I will have security throw you out."
"Is there a problem here?"
The deep, commanding voice echoed down the hallway.
Derek spun around, his face instantly transforming from a sneer into a polite, submissive smile as he saw Ethan Cole walking toward us, flanked by two senior vice presidents.
"Mr. Cole!" Derek said, his voice dripping with sycophancy. "No, no problem at all. I was just... helping this young woman. She seems to have gotten lost on her way out. I was about to call security to escort her from the premises."
Ethan stopped. He looked at Derek, his expression colder than the winter air outside.
"She is not lost, Mr. Vance," Ethan said, his voice quiet but carrying immense weight. "And she does not need to be escorted out. Clara Vance is our new Senior Medical Billing Coordinator. She reports directly to the department head on this floor."
Derek’s jaw literally dropped. He looked from Ethan to me, utterly speechless.
"And Mr. Vance," Ethan added, taking a step closer, his eyes locking onto the younger man with a fierce intensity. "I suggest you treat our new coordinator with the utmost respect. If I hear of any further unprofessional behavior from you, your employment with Cole Industries will be terminated immediately. Do I make myself clear?"
Derek swallowed hard, his face turning a deep, embarrassed red. "Yes, Mr. Cole. Perfectly clear."
May you like
"Good," Ethan said. He then turned to me, his expression instantly softening into a warm, encouraging smile. "Welcome to the team, Clara. I look forward to seeing your work."
As Ethan walked away, Derek stared at me, his eyes filled with a terrifying mixture of confusion, anger, and fear. He realized, in that moment, that I was no longer the helpless, pregnant girl he had abandoned. I had the backing of the most powerful man in the city.
