Chapter 8 - The Verdict of Freedom

Judge Henderson looked from Mark Sterling’s sweating face over to Victor Rinaldi, then down at the comprehensive financial audit and employment contracts handed over by the senior legal partners. The evidence was bulletproof, legally unassailable, and backed by the most powerful guarantor in New York.

"Well," Judge Henderson cleared his throat, adjusting his glasses. "In light of the verified employment, the stable housing arrangements, and the complete lack of credible evidence supporting the petitioner's instability, this court denies Mr. Sterling's motion for custody modification."

The judge slammed his gavel down with a sharp, echoing crack.

"Primary physical and legal custody remains permanently with Sarah Bennett. Mr. Sterling’s visitation rights will be strictly supervised. Court is adjourned."

Sarah froze for a second as the words sank in. Won. She had won. She didn't lose Lily.

Tears of pure relief spilled over her eyelashes, and before she could even process it, little Lily came running down the aisle, leaping into her arms. "Mommy! We won! We get to stay together!"

Sarah buried her face in her daughter's hair, sobbing tears of absolute joy. When she finally looked up, she saw Victor standing a few feet away, watching them with a quiet, fierce tenderness that completely shattered his mafia-boss exterior.

As Mark Sterling gathered his papers in bitter defeat and stormed out of the courtroom, Victor walked over to Sarah and Lily, offering a handkerchief with a warm, genuine smile.

"I told you," Victor murmured softly, looking down at Sarah. "You didn't have to fight this war alone anymore."
