Chapter 5 - The Unseen Shadow

That night, after the boys were finally tucked into bed—quietly listening to a story Sarah read from an old book she found in the study—Victor invited Sarah into his private study.

The room smelled of aged leather, bourbon, and old parchment. Floor-to-ceiling bookshelves lined the walls, and a massive mahogany desk sat in the center. Victor poured two glasses of amber liquid, sliding one across the desk toward Sarah.

"You passed the test," Victor said, leaning back in his leather chair. "In fact, you shattered every expectation I had. You are officially hired, Miss Bennett. Name your salary, and double it. Plus full medical coverage for you and your daughter."

Sarah stared at the glass of bourbon, overwhelmed by the sudden turn of events. Her thirty-six dollars, her terror of the upcoming custody hearing, the suffocating weight of poverty—it all seemed to momentarily recede.

"Thank you, Mr. Rinaldi," Sarah said sincerely. "It means more than you know. But... there is something you should know about me before we finalize this."

Victor raised an eyebrow, his protective instincts instantly flaring back up. "What kind of trouble are you in?"

"It's not criminal trouble," Sarah sighed, looking down at her hands. "It's a custody battle. My ex-husband is a wealthy corporate lawyer who uses his money and connections to crush me. He claims I'm unstable, poor, and incapable of providing a stable home for my seven-year-old daughter, Lily. My final hearing is in two weeks, and if I lose, he takes her away forever."

The study went deathly quiet. Victor stared at Sarah, the air in the room shifting instantly from professional relief to cold, calculated intensity. He hated bullies. And in his world, a man who weaponized the law to steal a mother’s child was the lowest form of criminal.

"What is his name?" Victor asked softly, his voice dangerously smooth.

"Mark Sterling," Sarah replied, unaware of the storm she was about to unleash.

Victor’s eyes narrowed. Sterling was a corrupt corporate attorney who had occasionally crossed paths with some of Victor's business fronts—a man known for dirty tricks and hidden offshore accounts.

"Consider it handled," Victor said flatly.

"No!" Sarah protested quickly. "I don't want your underworld connections, Mr. Rinaldi. I need to win this legally. I need to prove I can stand on my own two feet."

Victor studied her for a long moment, a ghost of an approving smile touching his lips. "You have more spine than half my captains, Sarah. Very well. We will do it your way. But with the Rinaldi legal team backing your attorney, and your new salary as proof of financial stability, Sterling won't know what hit him."

Little did they know, outside the heavy wrought-iron gates of the estate, a shadowed figure was taking photographs through the rain-streaked windows—documenting Sarah entering the billionaire's mansion, gathering intelligence that Mark Sterling would weaponize in the courtroom.
