Chapter 5 - The Storm Over Sterling Manor

The Grand Regent Hotel was illuminated by hundreds of exterior spotlights, casting a brilliant glow across the velvet-draped entryway. Photographers and news reporters lined the red carpet, their cameras flashing rapidly as the city's wealthy elite arrived in a steady procession of limousines.

Inside the grand ballroom, champagne flowed freely from crystal towers. Julian Sterling stood near the center stage, surrounded by a group of prominent venture capitalists and city council members. He was laughing loudly, a flute of vintage Dom Pérignon in hand, wearing the triumphant smile of a man who believed he was utterly invincible.

Standing a few feet away was Eleanor Sterling, dressed in a sweeping violet gown adorned with pearls. She was holding court with several high-society matriarchs, leaning in closely to deliver her rehearsed poison.

"It’s just tragic, truly," Eleanor sighed dramatically, dabbing her eye with a lace handkerchief. "Julian tried so hard to help Vivian. We offered her everything—a lovely home, financial support, even medical care. But some people simply cannot escape their poor origins. She left the baby at a county facility and ran off with some low-life she’d been seeing behind my son's back."

The women around her gasped in synchronized horror. "How utterly dreadful!" one whispered. "To abandon a child! Julian must be heartbroken."

"He is doing his best to remain strong for the company," Eleanor said smoothly, taking a delicate sip of champagne. "Tonight is about looking to the future. Sterling Enterprises is going public, and we are putting that unpleasant chapter behind us forever."

Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the main entrance of the ballroom swung open.

The loud chatter of the three hundred guests began to die down, room by room, starting from the back. A silence spread across the hall like a dropping temperature.

Julian paused mid-sentence, frowning as he turned toward the entrance. Eleanor scoffed, adjusting her pearl necklace. "What is the meaning of this disruption?"

Walking through the doorway was Marcus Vance-Thorne, accompanied by four senior partners from Thorne & Associates, all wearing dark, sharp business attire. But they were not walking in front. They were walking in formation behind a single figure.

I stepped onto the polished marble floor.

My emerald gown caught the light of the crystal chandeliers, shimmering like deep oceanic water. My posture was straight, my shoulders set, my chin held high with an effortless grace that made every head in the room turn. The absolute authority radiating from my presence was so intense that several security guards at the door instinctively took a step back, unable to stop me.

Whispers erupted instantly across the room like a sudden wind.

"Is that... is that Vivian?" "No, it can't be! Look at her!" "I thought Eleanor said she was living in poverty?"

Julian’s champagne glass slipped slightly in his hand, a few drops spilling onto his pristine cuff. His eyes widened in sheer disbelief. "Vivian?" he muttered, his voice cracking slightly.

Eleanor’s face contorted into a mask of pure rage. She marched straight toward me, her heels clicking loudly against the marble floor.

"How dare you come here!" Eleanor hissed loudly, ensuring her voice carried enough to frame me as an unhinged intruder. "You shameless, dishonest woman! Security! Throw this trespasser out immediately!"

Two hotel security officers rushed forward, but before they could lay a hand on me, Marcus Thorne stepped smoothly into their path, pulling out a laminated legal injunction stamped by the High Court.

"Touch her, and your employer will face an immediate ten-million-dollar lawsuit for unlawful assault on the controlling trustee of the Vance Estate Trust," Marcus announced in a clear, resonant voice that echoed off the grand walls.

The security guards stopped dead in their tracks, looking nervously at the seal on the paper.

"Vance Estate?" Eleanor sneered, trying to maintain her dominance. "What ridiculous game are you playing, Marcus? This woman is a penniless fraud who cleaned offices to survive!"

"I did clean offices, Eleanor," I said, my voice calm, clear, and perfectly poised. It carried effortlessly across the quieted ballroom. "I cleaned offices because your son illegally froze my personal bank accounts, canceled my health care, and stole my grandfather's private trust records while I was pregnant."

The crowd collectively gasped. Cameras began to flash as several undercover reporters in the crowd quickly pulled out their audio recorders.

Julian pushed his way through the crowd, his face flushed with a mixture of anger and panic. "Vivian, shut your mouth right now! You're making a scene! You have no standing here. This is a private corporate event!"

"Actually, Julian," I said, taking a step toward him, my emerald gown swaying smoothly. "This event is taking place in a venue owned by Vance Global Properties—a wholly owned subsidiary of my family's estate. Technically, you are hosting an event on my property."

Julian laughed nervously, looking around at his investors, who were now watching him with sharp, questioning eyes. "You're insane! Vance Global Properties? You're a nobody whose parents died in debt!"

Marcus signaled to his assistant, who immediately walked over to the main projection booth near the stage. Seconds later, the massive digital screens that had been displaying the 'Sterling Enterprises IPO' logo flickered and changed.

Displayed across every screen in the ballroom were official, certified documents stamped by the Supreme Judicial Court: CERTIFICATE OF HEIRSHIP AND ESTATE TRUSTEESHIP - VIVIAN VANCE.

Directly beneath it were real-time bank verification seals confirming the total liquid and fixed assets under my direct control: $4,250,000,000 USD.

The room went completely, utterly silent. You could hear a pin drop on the carpet.

Julian stared at the screens, his mouth hanging open. The color drained from his face so fast he looked like he might faint on the spot. "Four... four billion?"

"You wanted to know who my son's family was, Julian," I said, stepping closer until I was standing right in front of him, looking down at him with quiet pity. "He is the sole heir to the Vance legacy. A legacy built on honor, integrity, and genuine labor. Not stolen loans and corporate fraud."

Eleanor lunged forward, her finger pointed inches from my face. "You dirty little liar! Even if you have money now, you lied about my son! You bore a bastard child while married to Julian! We will sue you for adultery! We will destroy you in court!"

"I welcomed a DNA test five days ago, Eleanor," I replied softly, my voice filled with icy satisfaction. "And the results were finalized this morning. Would you like me to share them with the press right now?"
