Chapter 4 - A Mother’s Hidden Armor

Five days after giving birth, I was officially discharged from the hospital. Instead of returning to the cramped, mold-scented studio apartment where I had spent the last agonizing months of my pregnancy, a sleek black armored SUV was waiting for me at the private subterranean exit of the hospital.
Marcus sat in the front passenger seat, while two professional security guards stood watch near the doors. Within thirty minutes, we arrived at the Gates of Westwood—a sprawling, gated sanctuary situated on forty acres of lush, rolling hills just outside the city limits. The main residence was an architectural masterpiece of stone and glass, surrounded by ancient oak trees.
"This was your great-uncle’s primary residence," Marcus said as the vehicle pulled up the long, winding driveway. "It has been maintained by a dedicated staff for thirty years, waiting for its owner to return."
As I stepped through the front entrance, carrying Alexander in a soft wrap across my chest, the staff—headed by a middle-aged woman named Mrs. Gable—stood in a neat line, bowing respectfully.
"Welcome home, Ms. Vance," Mrs. Gable said warmly, her eyes shining with genuine emotion. "We have prepared the nursery according to Mr. Thorne’s instructions."
For the first time in over a year, I took a deep, unburdened breath. The air inside the house smelled of fresh cedar, lavender, and warmth. There were no leaking pipes, no creaking floorboards, and no constant fear of an eviction notice sliding under the door.
Over the next two weeks, while my body continued to heal, I transformed the study into a command center.
Every morning, after feeding Alexander and putting him down for his nap, I sat down with Marcus and his team of senior forensic analysts. Spread out across the massive mahogany desk were the files I had recovered from my old apartment, combined with the financial intelligence Marcus’s firm had gathered on Sterling Enterprises.
"Julian is bleeding cash," Marcus reported, sliding a chart across the desk. "He’s been taking out short-term high-interest bridge loans from private equity firms in Eastern Europe to cover the payroll for his flagship construction project, the Sterling Tower."
"And Eleanor?" I asked, scrolling through an encrypted laptop provided by Thorne & Associates.
"Eleanor has been busy spreading more rumors about you," Marcus said, disgust evident in his tone. "She hosted a charity luncheon three days ago at the Grand Regent Hotel. She publicly claimed that you abandoned your newborn child and fled the city after being exposed for trying to extort Julian."
I paused, my fingers hovering over the keyboard. A cold rage flared inside me, but I quickly channeled it into focus. "She wants to destroy my reputation so completely that even if I attempt to speak out, no one in high society will listen to me."
"Precisely," Marcus agreed. "She is controlling the social narrative, while Julian attempts to finalize his multi-million dollar public offering next month. If the IPO goes through, Julian will raise enough capital to pay off his hidden debts and secure his position permanently."
"Then we make sure that IPO never happens," I said, my voice dripping with icy calm. "When is the Sterling Enterprises Annual Gala?"
Marcus smiled faintly. "This coming Friday night at the Grand Regent Ballroom. Julian plans to use the event to announce the launch of his IPO to all his major investors, political allies, and the press."
"Perfect," I said, shutting the laptop screen with a decisive snap. "That will be the evening I make my public debut."
"Vivian," Marcus cautioned softly. "Going into that room means stepping into a lions' den. Eleanor and Julian will use every weapon in their arsenal to humiliate you."
"They think I'm a broken woman crying over lost pennies, Marcus," I said, turning my head to look out the floor-to-ceiling windows toward the sunlit gardens. "They have no idea that the woman they discarded now owns the floor they walk on."
I spent the next three days preparing. I didn't just review balance sheets; I underwent a complete physical transformation. Tailors from Paris arrived at the estate to fit me with a custom gown designed to conceal any lingering post-labor exhaustion while highlighting an undeniable aura of regal elegance.
I hired a private security team led by a former special forces commander named Vance Vance—no relation, though he found the name shared a poetic irony—to secure the perimeter of the gala and ensure that my entrance could not be blocked by Julian’s private staff.
On the afternoon of the gala, I stood in front of the full-length mirror in my dressing room. I was wearing an emerald green silk gown with long fitted sleeves and an understated diamond necklace from the original Vance family vault. My hair was swept up into an intricate, elegant chignon.
There were no traces left of the exhausted, sweat-drenched woman who had driven herself to the hospital through contractions three weeks ago. In her place stood a mother who had returned to reclaim what was stolen.

Mrs. Gable walked into the room, holding Alexander, who was quietly sleeping in a soft ivory blanket.
I leaned down and gently kissed my son's soft cheek. "Stay safe with Mrs. Gable, my little prince," I whispered against his soft skin. "Tonight, Mommy fixes everything."
