Chapter 10 - A New Dawn of Justice

The afternoon sun was warm and golden as the smell of grilled burgers and fresh lawn grass filled the air at the Parkers' backyard.

I stood near the wooden deck, holding a cold glass of lemonade, watching David throw a tennis ball for their golden retriever. Several of their friends and new neighbors were laughing near the patio, the atmosphere light and entirely free of tension.

My phone vibrated in my pocket.

I pulled it out, expecting a secure message from work. Instead, it was a text message from my father.

“We’re settled into the new apartment. Your mother is doing better. We’re taking things one day at a time. We think of you every day, Sarah. We’re so proud of you.”

I stared at the screen for a moment, the golden sunlight reflecting off the glass.

I didn't reply immediately, but I didn't delete the message either. For the first time, I felt like the door to reconciliation wasn't locked anymore. It was unlocked, waiting for the right time to be opened, on my terms.

"A penny for your thoughts?" Michelle asked, walking over and handing me a plate with a perfectly grilled burger.

I locked my phone and slipped it into my pocket, looking out at the happy gathering, then back at my own beautiful, secure house standing strong just a few blocks away.

"I was just thinking," I said, a genuine, warm smile spreading across my face, "that the truth has a funny way of finding its way home."

We clinked our glasses together in a quiet toast to the future—one built not on lies, but on the unshakeable foundation of justice, peace, and the freedom to finally move forward.
