Chapter 7 - Reclaiming Evangeline

With the trial finally behind us, the real work of building a new life began. The first step was legal and symbolic. A federal judge officially annulled the birth certificate of "Elena Brooks" and issued a restored, valid certificate for Evangeline Sterling.
To celebrate, Madeline threw a grand gala at the Sterling Estate. It wasn't just a corporate social event; it was the official introduction of the Sterling heiress to the world. The grand ballroom was filled with hundreds of guests—dignitaries, business leaders, and extended family members who had spent decades praying for my return.
I stood before the full-length mirror in my dressing room, wearing a stunning, emerald-green silk gown that perfectly matched my eyes. Nurse Chloe, who had become a close personal friend and had recently accepted a position as the director of patient advocacy at the hospital—a position fully funded by Madeline—stood behind me, helping me fasten a diamond necklace.
"You look absolutely breathtaking, Evangeline," Chloe said, her eyes shining with happiness. "From that broken girl in the trauma bay to this... you are a warrior."
"I couldn't have done it without you, Chloe," I said, turning around and wrapping her in a warm embrace. "You listened to me when I couldn't speak. You saved my life."
"I just did my job," Chloe smiled. "But I'm really glad I did."
A knock came at the door, and Madeline walked in. She wore a matching gown of midnight blue, looking every bit the matriarch of the Sterling dynasty. She stopped in her tracks, looking at me, her hands coming to her chest.
"Oh, my beautiful girl," Madeline whispered, walking over to take both of my hands. "Your father would be so incredibly proud of you tonight. You carry his strength and his grace."
"Thank you, Mom," I said softly.

It was the first time I had used the word Mom to her face. Madeline froze, her eyes widening, and then a profound, deep joy washed over her face. She pulled me into a tight, fierce embrace, weeping tears of absolute happiness. "I've waited twenty-nine years to hear you say that," she whispered against my hair.
When we walked down the grand grand staircase together, hand in hand, the entire ballroom erupted into applause. I looked out at the sea of smiling faces, feeling a sensation I had never experienced in my entire life: absolute belonging. I was no longer the shadow living in the corner of a toxic household. I was Evangeline Sterling, loved, cherished, and exactly where I was meant to be.
