Chapter 5 - Confrontation in the Shadows

A month after the crash, I was officially discharged from the hospital. Madeline brought me to the Sterling Estate, a breathtaking historical mansion nestled on the coast, surrounded by towering oak trees and high security walls. For the first time in my life, I felt what it truly meant to be safe. I had a bedroom that looked over the ocean, clothes that fit perfectly, and a mother who looked at me with unconditional pride and love.

But before I could fully embrace this new life, there was one final piece of unfinished business I had to attend to.

Julian’s trial was approaching, and his legal team was attempting to mount a defense claiming he was a victim of his parents' manipulation and was too intoxicated to be held responsible for the crash. Because of my recovery, I hadn't seen him since the night he tried to kill us both.

With Madeline’s reluctant permission and flanked by two massive security guards, I walked into the secure medical ward of the county jail where Julian was being held until he was fit for a standard cell.

He was sitting in a wheelchair, his leg in a heavy cast, his face scarred from the shattered windshield. The arrogant, untouchable golden boy was gone. In his place was a pathetic, pale imitation of a man. When the heavy iron door groaned open and I walked in, his eyes widened in absolute shock.

"Elena?" he stammered, his voice weak. "You... you're alive?"

"My name is Evangeline," I said, my voice completely devoid of emotion as I stood before him. I didn't sit down. I wanted him to look up at me. "And I am very much alive."

"Elena, please, you have to help me!" Julian suddenly cried out, reaching his trembling hands toward me, though the security guards immediately stepped forward, forcing him to pull back. "Mom and Dad... they lied to me! They told me you were trying to steal the family inheritance! They told me you were ruining the family! The night of the crash, I was crazy, I didn't know what I was doing! You know me, I'm your little brother! You used to pay my debts! You can't let them put me in prison!"

I looked at him, searching my heart for even a shred of the sisterly affection I had carried for him for decades. I found nothing. Only the memory of him screaming at me as he violently yanked the steering wheel toward an oncoming truck.

"I paid your debts because I thought we were family, Julian," I said coldly. "I endured thirty years of psychological abuse, neglect, and isolation because I thought I was the broken one. I thought if I just worked harder, gave more, and sacrificed myself, Mom and Dad would finally love me the way they loved you."

"We do love you!" he lied shamelessly, tears streaming down his face. "Please, just tell the prosecutors it was an accident! Tell them you don't want to press charges!"

"You knew about the kidnapping, didn't you?" I asked, cutting through his pathetic display.

Julian froze. The tears stopped, and a guilty, ugly look crossed his face.

"I found the files in Dad's office two years ago," I continued, leaning in slightly. "You knew I wasn't your biological sister. You knew I was stolen from a family that loved me. And instead of helping me, you used that information to blackmail Raymond and Cordelia into funding your degenerate lifestyle. And when the money ran out, you decided to eliminate me so you could inherit the Sterling trust that they had fraudulently claimed."

Julian’s face twisted, his pathetic demeanor disappearing, replaced by the ugly, vicious arrogance of the Brooks family. "So what if I did? You were always nothing in that house! You were just the quiet, boring freak who did everyone's taxes! You didn't deserve that money! It should have been mine! If Mom and Dad had just managed to pull the plug on you in time, I’d be sitting in a mansion right now instead of this rat hole!"

I smiled. It wasn't a smile of happiness, but of pure victory.

I reached into my pocket and pulled out a small, sleek recording device. I tapped the screen, showing the glowing red light indicating a live recording.

"Thank you, Julian," I said softly. "Your defense team was trying to argue diminished capacity and lack of intent. This full confession of your premeditated financial motive will look beautiful in front of the grand jury tomorrow morning."

May you like

Julian’s eyes turned frantic. He lunged out of his wheelchair, screaming obscenities, trying to grab the device from my hands. But the guards immediately tackled him to the floor, pinning his arms behind his back as he shrieked like a wild animal.

I turned my back on him, walking out of the cell without looking back. As the heavy iron doors slammed shut behind me, locking him away in the dark, I felt the final fragments of the Brooks family's hold on my soul shatter into dust.
