Chapter 6 - Healing the Wounds

Over the next two weeks, our home transformed into a sanctuary of peace and recovery. With Allison out of the picture, the heavy, suffocating atmosphere that had lingered in the hallways for months vanished completely.

Mom’s physical health improved remarkably under the attentive care of our physician and Jade’s daily support. The bruises on her arms faded, her color returned, and she began to smile again—a genuine, radiant smile I hadn't seen since before my father passed away. We spent our afternoons sitting on the back patio, drinking herbal tea, listening to classical music, and talking about old family memories.

Jade proved to be an absolute blessing. Beyond her professional competence as a caregiver, she brought warmth, laughter, and genuine kindness into our home. Mom adored her, often treating her like a granddaughter, teaching her traditional family recipes and sharing stories about my awkward childhood years.

My own life shifted focus entirely. I transitioned my engineering consultancy to remote-only work so I could remain close to home, refusing to ever leave my mother unprotected again.

Meanwhile, Marcus Vance was moving swiftly through the legal battleground. Allison’s defense team tried every trick in the book—filing motions to suppress the surveillance footage on privacy grounds, claiming the cameras violated domestic wiretapping laws. However, because the system was registered under my commercial enterprise and installed prior to our marriage in common areas and designated family care zones with full disclosure notices signed during initial smart-home configuration, the judge swiftly dismissed their motions.

Furthermore, forensic accountants uncovered an even deeper web of financial deceit. Allison hadn't just stolen from Mom; she had also funneled corporate sponsorships from my previous consulting projects into secret offshore accounts. Her exposure was total, absolute, and inescapable.

One afternoon, while I was reviewing architectural blueprints for a new home security interface in my office, a gentle knock sounded at the door. Jade stepped in, holding a small tray with a cup of coffee.

"Mr. Ryder, your mother wants to know if you're taking a break today or if you plan to live inside your computer forever," she teased with a warm smile.

I laughed, closing my laptop and rubbing my eyes. "Tell her I surrender. I'm coming out right now."

Jade smiled, placing the coffee on my desk before turning to leave.

"Jade," I said, stopping her.

She turned back, looking at me inquisitively. "Yes, Mr. Ryder?"

"Please, call me Ryder. And... thank you. Not just for what you did on the day I came home, but for everything since then. You brought life back into this house."

A faint blush dusted Jade’s cheeks, and she smiled softly. "I'm just glad I could help, Ryder. Your family deserves peace."

As she walked out of the office, I realized something profound: out of the wreckage of betrayal and cruelty, something genuine and beautiful was slowly beginning to take root.
