Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

The video played on loop in the living room, casting eerie shadows across Allison’s pale, trembling face. She stared at the screen, her previous arrogance completely shattered. The realization that every cruel word, every malicious smirk, and every violent act had been captured from multiple angles finally crushed her defenses.

"Ryder..." she whispered, her voice cracking as she took a tentative step toward me, tears welling in her eyes. "Please. Think about our history. Think about everything we’ve built together. We can fix this. We can get counseling. Don't throw our marriage away over an old woman and a manipulative maid."

"Our marriage ended the moment you raised a weapon against my mother," I said, my tone absolute. "Pack your things. You have until morning to get out of this house."

"You can't kick me out!" she shrieked, her mask of vulnerability snapping back into unadulterated rage. "This is my house too! My name is on the deed! If you try to force me out, I’ll claim domestic abuse! I’ll tell the police you threatened me, and let’s see who they believe—a successful woman or an unhinged husband just back from overseas!"

I didn't blink. I simply reached into my jacket pocket, pulled out a thumb drive, and placed it on the coffee table beside her wine glass.

"That drive contains copies of the footage, the bank fraud documents, and medical records from the hospital documenting my mother’s injuries," I said calmly. "A duplicate of this drive is already sitting in the inbox of my corporate attorney, along with instructions to forward it directly to the district attorney if I am not reachable by nine o'clock tomorrow morning. You can choose to leave quietly, or you can wait here for the police to arrest you for elder abuse, financial fraud, and assault. The choice is yours."

Allison stared at the thumb drive as if it were a venomous snake. She knew my attorney; he was a shark who specialized in corporate litigation and defense. There was no bluffing here.

Without another word, she turned on her heel, ran up the stairs, and began throwing clothes into suitcases with frantic, desperate energy.

While she packed, I walked into the kitchen and called Jade. The phone rang twice before a soft, cautious voice answered.

"Hello?"

"Jade, it's Ryder. I'm so sorry for everything that happened today. How is your head?"

"I'm okay, Mr. Ryder. Just a few stitches. More than that... I'm worried about your mom. Is she safe?"

"She's sleeping at the hospital with security outside her door," I assured her. "Jade, what you did today—risking your own safety to protect my mother—I can never thank you enough. You saved her life."

"I couldn't just stand there and watch," Jade replied softly. "Your mother is a wonderful woman. She didn't deserve any of that."

"When my mother comes home, things are going to change. I want you to stay on as her personal caregiver and head of household management, with a salary that reflects your true value. But for tonight, get some rest. I'll handle everything here."

After hanging up, I sat at the kitchen island and reviewed the financial records. It wasn't just the eighty thousand dollars from Mom's retirement account. Allison had also maxed out three credit cards in my name and was quietly putting down payments on a luxury apartment downtown under a shell company. She hadn't just been abusing my mother; she had been preparing to gut my finances and abandon me the moment I returned from overseas.

At 4:00 a.m., Allison dragged two heavy designer suitcases down the stairs. Her face was hard, devoid of remorse, filled only with bitter resentment. She slammed the front door behind her without looking back.

I was finally alone in the house, but the battle was only just beginning.
