Chapter 9 - The Harbor of Peace

The ferry ride to the San Juan Islands was magical. The afternoon sun danced across the deep blue waters of the Pacific Northwest, and pod of killer whales broke the surface in the distance, sending the passengers into collective delight.
Leo stood at the railing, wearing a warm fleece jacket, laughing as the sea spray hit his face. Thomas stood right next to him, pointing out the different islands and explaining the migration patterns of the marine life. They looked natural together—the brilliant, patient doctor and the bright, curious boy.
When we arrived at the Albright estate, it was a beautiful timber-framed home nestled right on the water’s edge. Thomas’s parents, both retired educators, welcomed us with open arms, treating Leo not as a guest, but as a treasured addition to the family.
That evening, after a dinner filled with laughter, storytelling, and delicious homemade food, Thomas and I walked down to the private dock. The sky was a brilliant canvas of twilight purple and deep orange, reflecting perfectly on the mirror-like surface of the bay.
"He really is an amazing kid, Zoe," Thomas said, wrapping his arm around my waist to keep me warm against the evening breeze. "You did an incredible job raising him through such a difficult transition."
"I didn't do it alone," I murmured, leaning my head against his shoulder. "My family helped. And lately... you’ve helped more than you know."
Thomas stopped walking, turning me to face him. He took both of my hands in his, his gaze intense, steady, and filled with an undeniable, deep love.
"Zoe, I’ve spent my entire life focusing on my career, saving lives in the operating room, thinking that was enough," he said softly. "But the moment you walked into my life, I realized what was missing. I don't want to just be a part of your world when it's convenient. I want to build a life with you. I love you, Zoe. And I love Leo."
He pulled a small, elegant velvet box from his pocket, opening it to reveal a beautiful, conflict-free sapphire ring, surrounded by a halo of brilliant diamonds—sparkling like the ocean beneath us.
"Will you marry me?" he asked.
I looked at the ring, then up at the man who had shown me what true devotion looked like. There was no hesitation. No fear. My heart was completely at peace.
"Yes, Thomas," I whispered, tears of pure happiness shining in my eyes. "Yes, absolute yes."
From the deck of the house, we heard a small cheer. We turned to see Leo running down the lawn, a massive smile on his face, followed closely by my father, who was raised a glass of champagne from the porch with a proud, victorious grin.

Leo ran right into our arms, hugging both of us tightly. "I knew it!" he cheered. "Does this mean Thomas is staying forever?"
"Forever, buddy," Thomas smiled, lifting Leo up with a joyful laugh. "Forever."
