Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Collapse

Monday morning arrived with the clinical precision of a execution. In Silicon Valley, the corporate headquarters of Harrison Tech were buzzing. Evan walked through the glass atrium, holding a large coffee, feeling a slight twinge of irritation. Zoe hadn't answered any of his calls over the weekend. When he had returned to the house on Friday morning, the empty closets and the single white envelope on the kitchen island had confused him more than panicked him.

He thought she was throwing a tantrum. He thought she would go to a hotel for a few days, realize how good her life was as the wife of a billionaire CEO, and come crawling back.

He walked into his executive suite, only to find his assistant, Marcus, looking pale, standing next to three men in dark gray suits.

"Evan," Marcus whispered, his voice trembling. "You have an emergency board meeting. Now."

"What's going on?" Evan frowned, setting his coffee down. "Is there a market dip?"

"No, Mr. Harrison," said one of the men in gray, stepping forward. "I am Richard Sterling, senior counsel for Vance Global. We represent the majority shareholder of Harrison Tech."

Evan scoffed. "Majority shareholder? I own the controlling interest. What are you talking about?"

Sterling calmly opened a leather portfolio and slid a document across the mahogany table. It was the "educational trust update" Evan had signed a month prior while nodding along to Vivian's complaints about her landlord.

"Section 4, Paragraph B," Sterling noted dryly. "In exchange for a continuous, interest-free capital infusion of eighty million dollars over the last three years—which you categorized as anonymous venture angel funds—you agreed to a standard performance-and-equity clause. In the event of a marital separation or legal breakdown initiated by a breach of fiduciary trust, the voting rights automatically vest in the trust trustee. That trustee is your wife, Zoe Vance Harrison."

Evan’s heart dropped into his stomach. The room seemed to tilt. "Zoe? Zoe doesn't know anything about venture capital. Her father is just a retired logistics manager!"

"Arthur Vance owns the largest shipping and logistics conglomerate on the Pacific Rim, Mr. Harrison," Sterling corrected smoothly. "And as of 8:00 AM today, your wife has called for a vote of no confidence regarding your position as Chief Executive Officer. Effective immediately, you are suspended pending an audit of company funds used for personal, non-familial expenses."

Evan staggered back against the glass window. His phone began to ring. It was Vivian. He pressed answer automatically, his voice hollow. "Vivian, not now—"

"Evan! Tanner’s private school tuition check bounced!" Vivian cried on the other end. "And the landlord says the lease on the luxury townhouse you signed for us isn't valid because the corporate account was frozen! What is going on?"

Evan looked at the legal documents on the table, then at the empty chair where he used to sit with absolute authority. The reality of what he had thrown away began to settle in like ice in his veins.

"Zoe..." he whispered to the empty room, but there was no one there to give him a gentle, reasonable excuse anymore.
