Chapter 3 - Blue Lights and Broken Alibis

Within five minutes, the clinic waiting room was flooded with the flashing red and blue lights of local squad cars. Two police officers, a heavy-set sergeant with kind eyes named Miller and a younger, sharp-looking detective named Hayes, pushed through the glass doors.

Dr. Vance met them in the hallway, briefing them in hushed, urgent tones while pointing back toward Exam Room Three.

When Detective Hayes stepped into the room, his hand instinctively hovered over his holster, his eyes sweeping the small space. He took in Brenda’s designer suit, Hannah’s trembling posture, my tear-soaked face, and finally, Lily, who was now quietly crying into her own hands.

"Who called it in?" Detective Hayes asked.

"I did, Detective," Dr. Vance said, stepping inside behind him. "And I want you to look at this file, and then look at the child’s lower extremities. Mrs. Gallagher attempted to prevent me from completing the physical exam."

Detective Hayes walked over to the examination table. He didn't rush. He knelt down gently so he was at eye level with Lily.

"Hey there, Lily," the detective said softly, his voice remarkably gentle for a man of his size. "Can you tell me your name?"

Lily peeked through her fingers. "Lily... Lily Parker."

"Lily, I’m Detective Hayes. I’m a police officer. You’re safe now, okay? Nobody is going to hurt you anymore." He looked up at Dr. Vance, who carefully lifted Lily’s jeans once more.

Detective Hayes visibly flinched. The hardened look in his eyes hardened further into pure steel. He stood up slowly, turned on his heel, and locked his gaze onto Brenda.

"Mrs. Gallagher, you’re coming with us," Detective Hayes said, stepping forward. "Sergeant Miller, cuff her."

"You cannot be serious!" Brenda shrieked, thrashing her arm away as Sergeant Miller stepped forward with the handcuffs. "I am a registered foster parent! I have a contract with the county! You have no right—I demand to call my attorney! I demand to call David!"

At that name, the air in the room went completely dead.

David.

My ex-husband.

"David?" Detective Hayes stopped mid-motion, his eyebrows furrowing. "Who is David?"

"David Parker!" Brenda snapped, her voice cracking with panic now that her armor was slipping. "Her father! He’s the one who gave me custody! He’s the one who said she needed strict discipline to break her mother’s bad habits! He paid me to keep her in line!"

The room spun.

I grabbed the edge of the metal sink to keep from falling. My mind raced back through the months of court battles, the endless depositions, the pristine financial records David had presented to the judge showing his stable income, his quiet suburban townhouse, his seemingly noble concern for Lily's welfare.

"What did you just say?" I choked out, stepping forward. "What did David have to do with this?"

Detective Hayes turned his attention between Brenda and me. "Ma'am, who are you?"

"I’m her mother," I whispered, tears streaming freely down my cheeks. "Elena Parker. That’s my ex-husband. He’s the one who testified that I was an unfit mother. He’s the one who helped CPS place her here."

Detective Hayes’s expression turned grim. He motioned for another arriving officer to secure Brenda in the hallway.

"Hannah," Detective Hayes said, turning to the trembling social worker. "Grab your clipboard, your laptop, and every single file you have on the Parker case. You’re coming down to the precinct, too. And ma'am," he looked at me, "you’re coming with us. We need to talk about David Parker."
