Chapter 10 - Our Forever After

The sun was setting over the park, painting the sky in vibrant shades of amber, violet, and deep rose.

Lily was running across the green lawn, chasing a stray golden retriever whose owner was smiling and waving from a nearby bench. Her yellow sunflower dress swirled around her knees, and her bright, ringing laughter echoed across the grass.

I sat on a wooden park bench, watching her with a cup of herbal tea in my hands.

Mr. Harrison and Dr. Marcus Vance—who had become dear family friends and honorary uncles to Lily—had stopped by earlier that afternoon to drop off a congratulatory gift for Lily’s completion of her first full year back in school. She had made the honor roll, and her teacher had written a glowing note praising her creativity and kindness.

My phone buzzed in my pocket.

It was a text from the state family advocacy board, finalizing the permanent, unchallengeable sealing of our adoption and custody records. The legal nightmare was officially, permanently over. David’s name was legally stripped from her birth certificate, replaced by a sole, unshakeable truth: Lily belonged to me, and I belonged to her.

"Mommy! Look how fast I can run!" Lily called out, sprinting back toward me with flushed cheeks and sparkling eyes.

She threw herself onto the bench beside me, breathing heavily, a happy grin plastered across her face.

I pulled a napkin from my purse and gently wiped a smudge of chocolate ice cream from the corner of her mouth, smiling down at her.

"You're the fastest runner in the whole world, bug," I said softly.

Lily leaned her head against my shoulder, her small body relaxing into mine as we watched the last sliver of the sun dip below the horizon.

The door of our life was wide open now. There were no locks, no guards, no secrets, and no fear. Just the quiet rustle of the evening wind, the warmth of the spring air, and the unbreakable bond of a mother and daughter who had walked through the fire and come out together on the other side.

"I love you, Mommy," Lily whispered, her eyelids growing heavy as the stars began to blink awake above us.

May you like

I wrapped my arms around her, pulling her close against my heart, knowing that everything was finally, perfectly right in our world.

"I love you more, my sweet girl," I whispered back into the quiet night. "Forever and always."
