Chapter 9 - Rebuilding Above the Ruins

Finding someone who doesn't want to be found is difficult. Finding someone who is deliberately hiding to protect you is nearly impossible—unless you know where her heart truly belongs.
Spencer didn't send private investigators this time. He went himself.
He spent three days visiting every small town within a fifty-mile radius of the city, searching for small, quiet nurseries and community centers. He knew Elena’s passion was working with children and growing things.
On the fourth afternoon, in a small coastal town two hours south, Spencer found what he was looking for.
It was a small, local community garden behind an elementary school. The afternoon sun was warm, casting a golden light over rows of blooming flowers and green vegetables.
And there, kneeling in the soil near a patch of bright yellow sunflowers, wearing a dusty apron and a straw hat, was Elena.
Spencer stopped at the wooden gate of the garden, his heart pounding in his chest like a sledgehammer. He took a deep breath and stepped onto the gravel path.
Elena was carefully weeding around the base of a tall sunflower when a shadow fell over her.
“You know,” a familiar, deep voice said softly above her, “sunflowers grow much better when you have a four-year-old assistant watering them with a pink watering can.”
Elena froze. The small hand trowel dropped from her fingers into the dirt.
She slowly lifted her head. Spencer was standing there, dressed not in his corporate suit, but in a simple dark sweater and jeans. His face was thin, his eyes tired, but he was looking at her with a warmth so deep it made her throat lock up.
“Spencer?” she whispered, standing up quickly, her hands covered in soil. “What... what are you doing here? How did you find me?”
“I searched everywhere,” Spencer said, taking a step closer. “Because I couldn't let the braver woman I know stay hidden in the shadows for a crime she didn't commit.”
Elena stepped back, panic flushing through her. “Spencer, you shouldn't be here! If Victoria finds out—”
“Victoria is in a federal holding cell,” Spencer said gently, reaching out and closing the distance between them. He gently caught her dirt-stained hands in his own. “She and Harrison were arrested three days ago. The board knows everything. The company is safe. I am safe.”
Elena stared at him, her lips parting in shock. “She... she can't hurt you anymore?”
“No,” Spencer said, his voice trembling with emotion. “She can’t hurt anyone ever again. I heard the recording, Elena. I know what she threatened you with. I know you walked away from everything to protect me and Sophie.”
Tears rushed to Elena’s eyes, spilling over her cheeks, leaving small tracks through the dust on her face. “I couldn't let her destroy your life, Spencer. You and Sophie gave me a reason to feel human again. I couldn't be the reason you lost everything.”
“You weren't the reason I lost everything,” Spencer whispered, bringing her hands up to his chest, right over his beating heart. “You were the only thing keeping me from losing my mind. When you left, the house died. Sophie stopped talking again. I stopped sleeping. We don't just need you as a caregiver, Elena. We need you because you are the heart of our lives.”
Elena sobbed, wiping her face with her shoulder. “Is Sophie okay?”
“She’s waiting in the car,” Spencer said, a soft, beautiful smile breaking across his face.
Elena looked past Spencer toward the road. Standing by the open door of the black SUV was Thomas, the driver, holding hands with a little girl in a bright yellow dress.
Sophie saw Elena looking at her. She let go of Thomas’s hand and ran as fast as her little legs could carry her, her brown teddy bear tucked tightly under her arm, shouting at the top of her lungs:
“ELENA! ELENA!”
Elena dropped to her knees right in the soft garden dirt, opening her arms wide. Sophie slammed into her, wrapping her arms tightly around Elena’s neck, burying her face in Elena’s shoulder.
“You came back! You came back!” Sophie cried, her small body shaking with tears of relief.

“I’m here, sweetheart,” Elena sobbed, holding the child close, pressing kisses into her soft hair. “I’m so sorry. I’m here now.”
Spencer knelt down beside them, wrapping his long arms around both of them, pulling them tight against his chest. For the first time in two long years, the cold, lingering shadow of loss completely vanished, replaced by the unbreakable warmth of a family restored.
