Chapter 8 - The Empire Strikes Back

Three days later, the boardroom of Miller Global Industries on the fiftieth floor was silent enough to hear a pin drop.

The five executive board members sat around the massive mahogany conference table, murmuring among themselves, looking uneasy. Rumors had spread that the reclusive billionaire CEO, who hadn't set foot in the corporate office in six months, was holding an emergency session.

The double doors swung open.

Robert Miller walked in. He wore a razor-sharp charcoal suit, his silver-streaked hair combed back, his expression completely devoid of human warmth. Behind him walked four federal marshals in full uniform, carrying thick manila folders.

"Robert," Marcus Vance, the senior managing director and CEO's long-time ally, said with a nervous laugh, standing up to adjust his tie. "This is an unexpected surprise. What's the occasion? The Q3 earnings report isn't until next week—"

"Sit down, Marcus," Robert said. His voice was quiet, carrying a lethal weight that commanded instant obedience.

Marcus swallowed hard and sat back down.

Robert walked to the head of the table, tossing a thick stack of forensic transcripts and financial audits onto the polished wood. The papers slid across the surface, scattering before the terrified faces of the board members.

"Ten years ago," Robert began, his eyes sweeping across the men he had once considered brothers, "my wife died in a staged car accident on Bellmont Ridge. For ten years, I believed it was a tragic accident. For ten years, I buried myself in work, leaving this company in your hands."

Marcus’s face turned the color of chalk. "Robert, what is this? Where did you get these documents?"

"From a federal financial audit I ordered forty-eight hours ago, cross-referenced with local police corruption files," Robert replied, his voice dropping into a chilling register. "Turns out, my lovely partners discovered that Clara had found out about our overseas shell companies. So you cut the brake lines on her car. You thought you killed both of them."

Panic erupted around the table. One board member tried to stand, but a federal marshal placed a heavy hand on his shoulder, forcing him back into his chair with a metallic click of handcuffs.

"You can't prove anything!" another board member shouted, his voice cracking. "It's hearsay! It's a conspiracy!"

"It's not hearsay," Robert said softly, leaning his palms on the table and staring directly into Marcus's eyes. "Because my daughter survived. And she remembers the night of the crash. Furthermore, federal prosecutors have already seized all corporate assets linked to your offshore accounts as of four o'clock this morning."

Marcus stared at Robert, realizing the game was utterly, irrevocably over. He slumped back in his leather chair, trembling.

"Take them out of my sight," Robert commanded.

The marshals moved in, hauling the disgraced executives out of the boardroom in handcuffs, their protests echoing down the fifty-story corridor until the heavy oak doors clicked shut.
